Title: Windows 10 updates
Post by: justinjja on October 18, 2017, 02:14:29 AM
So I have several Windows 10 computers that I uses exclusively for mining.
I don't want windows updates at all.

I disabled the windows update service, and that worked for about a year,
but lately I have been noticing that the windows update service has been re-enabling it self???

Any way to stop windows updates?

I could probably just block all Microsoft domains in my firewall,
but I'm hoping to find an easier way.

Maybe this link can answer your questions https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3080351/how-to-manage-windows-10-notification-and-upgrade-options but I think after you disabled windows update services it will stop checking windows update.

I had to disable Windows update on my mining rigs.  Frigging annoying.  I keep telling myself that I am going to learn Linux.  When I was mining on Windows 7 it was quite stable.

Remember that you have to patch Linux too if your system is online.

Set your ethernet and/or wifi connections as metered and the updates should not auto download.

install windows 10 and do not activate, you will not receive any updates. Before the registration period expires use regeddit to disable windows 10 updates and windows defender

gpedit.exe group policy disable all updatesfor good

yeah actually, none of the other options really work except this one Marvell2 suggested

I was pulling my hair about this sh!t for straight 2 or maybe even 3 months, every time I tried to disable scheduled updates in "task scheduler" or in msconfig.exe win 10 would find a way every few weeks or so to update itself and my goddamn amd driver to the latest version. and ofc my 390's wouldn't mine after that.

But never more after I realized the power of group policy editor
gpedit.msc is a very powerful tool for win 10 especially.

In win7 I didn't need it because microsoft didn't screw up win7 customization so hard such as they did in win10.

almost nothing serious can be done in win 10 without gpedit.exe

So you can also setup a fake WSUS in the Local Group Policy Settings under gpedit.msc

xpand Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components and click Windows Update. Locate Specify intra Microsoft Update service location

Yes, you can change the settings for not to avail the update your windows PC. You have to check it as Never check for updates. You will find this as not recommended in windows. This is the only way to stop the update notification every time.

Go with the below control panel page to make change this setting.

Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Change settings

I did so on my girlfriend's notebook, but after some months it started re-downloading and re-updating on its own despite setting the connection as metered.

In the end, I came to the conclusion that the best way to get rid of those auto updates was to simply update everything for once.
