Title: Ledger Nano S seed questions.
Post by: Anthony1985 on October 19, 2017, 08:51:57 AM
I got 2 new Ledger Nano S, I had before 2 Ledger nano where I had the same seed for both Bitcoin wallets.

I imported the seed of the Nano on one of my 2 Nano S and installed there also 3 alt coins wallets. From my understanding now the seed to recover the alt coins wallet is the one of my Bitcoin (the one I had on the nano)

The question now is, can I import the same seed on the other Nano S and install there also 3 different alt coin wallets?

Will the bitcoin Seed be valid for all the 6 alt coins in case I lose it?

I think yes you can import it the seed to other nano s including your altcoin wallet.. But if your altcoin wallet is not included in your nano wallet where you get  the seeds and you will just import the private keys of altcoin wallet i think it will not added in your wallet..
So if your seeds is includes all of your altcoin and bitcoin when backuping seeds if you import it to other nano s you can get also your altcoin wallets including the funds..
Once you get the seeds you can import it in any of you nano s..

I basically want to have my Bitcoin seed (from the old ledger nano) on my Nano S and for all the alt coins wallet.

1 Ledger Nano S - (Nano Seed) Bitcoin - Ether - Vert - Litecoin

2 Ledger Nano S - (Nano Seed) Bitcoin - Ether - Pivx - Viacoin

Would work, right?

I can't confirm since I never had a hardware wallet.

But why don't you try out? Import your old seed in your new Ledger Nano S, write out the Ether or other altcoin address, recover it again in the same or second device and see if both wallets are the same. Maybe even send a minimum amount to see if everything is ok before risking a big amount of cash.

Yes, you can "clone" your seed phrase onto as many hardware wallets as you like... it will generate the same "seed", so whenever you add a "coin app", it will generate the same addresses (even if you uninstall the coin app and reinstall it).

So, in you example #1 and #2 will have identical Bitcoin wallets... and if you uninstalled Viacoin from #2 and installed Litecoin, then the two litecoin wallets would be identical, you could then uninstall litecoin from #1 and install ViaCoin and it would have a wallet that was identical to the one that you previously had on #2:

1 Ledger Nano S - (Nano Seed) Bitcoin - Ether - Vert - Litecoin
2 Ledger Nano S - (Nano Seed) Bitcoin - Ether - Pivx - Viacoin

V
1 Ledger Nano S - (Nano Seed) Bitcoin - Ether - Vert - Litecoin (same)
2 Ledger Nano S - (Nano Seed) Bitcoin - Ether - Pivx - Litecoin (same)

V
1 Ledger Nano S - (Nano Seed) Bitcoin - Ether - Pivx - Viacoin (same as original Viacoin wallet)
2 Ledger Nano S - (Nano Seed) Bitcoin - Ether - Vert - Litecoin

That's just amazing! Basically one seed for everything.
