Some good indicators are a coin that solves a problem or implements a solution better than other coins and has an active development team and community.

Study the whole deal, assess your risk/reward ratio...basically study as much as you can otherwise you're gonna throw yourself into something due to fomo (the fear of missing out) and you'll very likely get burned.
