Title: ERC20 vs waves
Post by: Darrylld on October 19, 2017, 02:36:19 PM
Hello,

I am creating a coin/ token and wondered, is there a downside to using waves to create it? Its only slightly easier to create vs an Ethereum based. We picked waves due to their DEX API, what does this community think?

I'd go for ERC20 instead of WAVES, because the ecosystem around it is way more developped than WAVES, but it's only a personnal opinion  ;D

Ethereum has a lot more users. ERC20 technologies are not worse than others, so Ethereum is exactly better.

they have more time for waves, my friend. waves smart contract not found. recently released 10 projects with 9 ether -based.The projects with the ether contract are much more attractive and people support more such projects. I do not know what you really are going to offer, but I think it would be more beneficial for you and your investors if you put an ether-based product in the process.they already think like many people from me. I'm sure of that :)
waves ,one day will definitely come to the right place. but not now.

I think erc20 is preferable. There are a lot of junk tokens on waves, and it might be unfair, but your coin could be tarnished by association.

Most of me that says you should stick to Ethereum since most people use ETH (that way you will reach the most people), however I am certain that:

A: The community is technologically advanced enough to be able to use a different platform to buy a token in the case that the token is worthwhile.

B: Just because everybody else is using ETH doesn't mean you need to, especially if another platform offers a technological advantage.

Although this question is really only answerable by you and what fits best for your project.

I believe there should be competition at crypto token issuing platforms to make progress faster. So I prefer WAVES at this case. But ERC20 standart is more acceptable by market, this is truth.

People are still more confident in buying Ethereum based tokens versus Waves based tokens, even though I don't understand exactly why.

Go ERC-20. Waves has some promise but lacks critical mass that Ethereum definitely broke through in the last 12 months. End of the day when developing on someone else's platform you want the biggest audience possible- that is Ethereum, and it isn't going to change any time soon.

I will say go for ERC20, most users have Ethereum wallets. Frankly speaking, I do not wish to create another wallet for joining an ICO. Unless the project is very attractive to me.

Can you interact with Waves tokens? you can send Eth to a smart contract and receive Erc20 tokens. when will you have the same feature with Waves?

They are saying that smart contracts will become accessible on Waves platform but what would be different than what we have with Eth and other

Blockchains like them?

Waves is far more easier for the noobs, and that actually aint a good thing.
Because scammers can create tokens with a few clicks and begin the distribution.

Eth has problems with scalability, but generally is far more known and accepted, who knows what future brings.

Agree with the majority here! ERC-20 is used by most of the ICOs and even the most popular ICO use it. So it's definitaly preferable over waves

And could be transferred and tradeable on Etherdelta

Waves is a bullshit, i would not create a token in their system because nobody is going to be interested in buying your tokens, better to use a erc20 token with a smart contract instead of being greedy and only pay $5 to create a token on Waves platform.. It is better to invest $500 and create a smart contract instead of making it a not-attractive investment for all the other people who see your ANN.

If you are a token developer then dont create a coin on Waves dex please! you are going to make a dissater on your project, nobody is going to invest anything in your ico because waves ruins every project in where it has been, the only succesfull project using waves technology has only been Waves, because ico's runned by them are a garbage, all of them did not even raised more than 30m in each one of their ico's.
just like the other user said, invest a little more, but hire a good contract developer and create your professional token.

This is a very strong words.
Anyway, I inevested on both waves and eth and I really wonder why the price difference is so huge.

In my personal opinion based on experience and using both systems, I advise you to go for ERC-20 tokens.
The smart contracts system that Ethereum offers is much more developed and has a lot of opportunities to create more.

Plus creating a token there isn't really hard at all and even you can do it by yourself. Open source of tokens is available on the ether website. You just need to modify simple info like name, supply and decimals and you're ready to go (just assuming that you want to send a normal token that's going to be traded). It seriously won't cost you more than $50. But of course you can create a custom one which requires professionals.

Waves tokens aren't as popular as erc20. And its exchange isn't as active or easy as erc20 tokens. Take etherdelta for example. You can get your token listed in no time once you decide to add it.

Most, if not all, ICOs that are available right now are in ERC.
But at the end of the day, it's your project and your choice.

I don't know of a single successful project that has been built on waves. I think this is a no brainer. I would go for erc20 without a doubt. Instead of taking chances with waves. Maybe when waves has smart contracts, things will change but for now, ETH is the boss

Title: Re: ERC20 vs waves

ERC20 can use smart contracts and create tokens.  They are more than a representation of property but can execute commands.  Waves token so far is only a representation of the token and can't do smart contracts.

Too many thrash coin that already created in the waves system, The waves platform just like useless. What is the benefit by using the waves platform? Less privacy, Less on its interest and another bad thing that linked to the waves.

Ethereum definitely has a higher barrier to entry, but you will get a much more flexible and customizable token. If you don't need that, then Waves would work fine.

You'd want to go with the one that has the most support. Waves doesn't have that many people trading their coin compared to Ethereum so the answer is pretty simple.

I support ERC-20 tokens more than waves as Ethereum is technically advanced than the waves token creation. Waves is just a copy cat idea and don't have much to offer.

Thank you everyone for the replies, which tell me which way to go.

Our project is an Android based application with a wallet, exchange and record of transactions. We are developing this around the Las Vegas tourism market, which I have worked in for 9 years. When I started with waves I liked that they had an API that we could build into our app. The features we want to have include: Wallet, exchange, user area. I am at the point of buying a server to build a node, meaning real money. I am now going to look at some other options.

ETRC20 have its shitcoin ethdelta exchange so is possible to dump very fast and you don't have to make ANY deal with exchange with bribing it.
SO to me ETH is no better there is no motion on waves echanges.

If you use waves I won't definitely invest in your ICO. The ICO's that used waves are the ones ended like crap in the end and many people lose interest in waves for the past months including me. It is true that waves are easier to use but that also makes it a risk because if anyone could easily use waves as their based many scam ICOs with no effort will choose it over Ethereum based token.

most, large markets accept ERC20 than waves, so I might prefer to use an ERC20-based coin, because of its greater market reach, or better. but that's just my mind, maybe a lot of people are liking waves in the appeal of ERC20

I am more on ERC20 coins, especially those coins that can be store at myetherwallet.com. Those coins are most likely going to pump. Unlike in the waves platform, not pumping once stored.

if you want a familiar and trusted token you must choose ERC20.
based on ethereum technology this will become a strong security.
but the negative impact of this ERC20 are many developer now become lazy for develop their own token protocol.
so they just use ERC20 without any new innovation.

I would go with ERC20 if you have the knowledge required to do it. The platform is much more adopted already and the developers are working nonstop to improve it. On waves you can't be sure it'll still be there a few years from now.

Nowadays ERC20 tokens is the trend of ICO's and mostly ICO's using ERC20 tokens against investment and some companies issue waves tokens but waves platform have very low volume. ERC20 tokens popularity is growing day by day and those tokens are easily tradable and have good volume. In my opinion, ERC20 tokens are good rather then waves tokens.

ERC20 tokens are superior to Waves tokens. ERC20 tokens are basically more popular. And there are smart contract technology allows so many different things like decentralized exchanges. On the other hand Waves tokens are hard to trade.

Title: Re: ERC20 vs waves

Ok, I guess a better question is:

Not considering the investor/ trader part, just the consumer use part. If you went to Vegas, and downloaded a branded Android app, would it matter if the coin/ wallet/ exchange were built on waves api or with erc20?

I really appreciate this feedback, and most likely will go erc-20 route.

I would like to say it is a necessity for a token to be created in the ERC20 Platform.

Less fees, but as Vitalik said in his recent interviews, ETHEREUM is gonna be huge in the next years.

Cheers for that. lol

Well anything can go wrong but with smart contracts, all is good.

Ethereum has a larger community, more support, and more functionality as a platform.  Smart contracts were supposed to be released in Q3 for Waves but now they have pushed it back to Q2 of 2018.  That alone should convince you not to use Waves.  Additionally, look at the quality of projects on each platform.  Since it is so easy to create and deploy a token on Waves, there's been a lot of bad projects that have hurt the credibility of the platform.

Title: Re: ERC20 vs waves
Post by: Ponylon on October 27, 2017, 08:34:01 AM
Waves is alright, but any serious projects will be using Ethereum (ERC20). Waves has its completely own ecosystem and it's not that flexible as ERC20 tokens are. ERC20 has already set the standard and it implements great updates and solutions (PoS coming soon, privacy centered transactions etc.) These are things that waves is lacking, and unless they implement similar things they will be left out of the race. Statistically, the majority of the projects use ERC20, which gives you a good idea (unbiased one) whether it's the best option or not. The usefulness of a product is usually reflected by it's adoption, and Ethereum has done until now a fantastic job in getting adopted by thousands of projects, and we see on a daily basis more and more joining the space. In my opinion, you'll be much better off using ERC20 - but you do need the know-how to create the smart contracts, which are not as necessary with Waves, it's up to you. It's a matter of implicity over quality in my opinion.

what i dislike with waves is the initial amount to be funded when making coin transfer , it needs 30 USD to buy waves before you can do waves based tokens transactions, unlike erc20- ethereum based token, it only need at least .01ETH or 3 Usd to make token transaction as for GAS processing, and it only needs .001 ETH to filled-up that GAS to make token transfer, but that .001 are large enough for the gas it can make more than 100 token transactions unlike waves, every token transactions need .001 waves which more expensive to me.

I agree with this,
Today, ETH is a boom
But that does not mean forever
Waves is just starting
It only needs more awareness

You can create token in waves, but talking it as a bullshitcoin, so as etherum token!

Waves isn't bad
I don't know nothing about ERC20

As far as I know all altcoins are using the Ethereum infrastructure
It's difficult to build a new one and they may have a problem of trust

ERC-20 is better than waves platform. Waves is very limited, Erc 20 has been used by most ICO developers.

Ethereum has existed for considerably longer than Waves.

But if Waves comes out with a simple to use GUI for token and smart contract creation it could trounce ERC20 easily.

waves and erc20 (etherium) are both good platform but i mostly see project (ico) that is under on erc20.  i  also choose and prefer erc20 over waves due to the fact that they supports myetherwallet but on waves you need to download and use a separate  wallet which is a hassel for me because i mainly join bounty campaigns that requires a myetherwallet and most of my coins/tokens are under erc20 based.

It's possible that they are going to do a "bulk" release of updates instead of doing small updates. If that was the case there could be a massive pump. But I wouldn't hold my breath for it. After all, it has been a while since anything happened with Waves.

We shouldn't even be comparing these platforms and protocols.  Comparing Ethereum to Waves is like a comparing a Ferrari to a Corvette.  There's a reason why they are different in market cap.  The community and development support is much larger with Ethereum.  The quality of projects are much better on Ethereum.  Waves offers little value other than easily creating tokens with no development experience and its decentralized exchange (which helps increase the volume of poor quality projects).  It doesn't support smart contracts and has been behind on it's development roadmap.

I would say that I'll go with ERC20 since there are a lot more people that use Ethereum than Waves. I've read a few arguments that there are a lot of trash and shitty tokens on waves, though comparing this to Ethereum there are also a lot of those kinds of tokens there. If however, you see that Waves is a lot more useful for your project, then why not? I think both of them have their flaws.

I think most of us would prefer ERC20 instead of waves because you can check yourself volume of trading on both platform then you can automatically understand which is the best among both. I have lots of coins on waves platform most of them are useless for me till now I don't know when they will move up very hardly we find buyers there and on the other hand if you check ERC20 support wallet you will find both seller & buyer in good numbers & If you notice that in the recent time most of the coins are launching on ERC20 support platform So I would suggest you to launch your coin on ERC20 support wallet rather then on Waves. Even I don't like to buy coins launching on waves platform its my personal opinion.

ERC20 without a doubt.

I don't know what stability you are talking about, but it can't be about the stability of the platform because that would be wrong.

And trust in ERC20 might get shattered if third party provides keep screwing up (Parity). Waves will also be the superior platform if they actually tick off their roadmap goals.

When you use wave for your project there will be  low patronage of that project compare to a project that is using MEW. The traffic in wave is so low that you can not compare it with Ether 's ERC20 wallet. Just check out and confirm that about 85%  or more of all ICO are coming out with MEW.

The Forbes article makes me want to continue to develop with waves. I know ERC20 is popular now. Man I am torn. I pulled my developer off waves and moved to ERC20 about 2 weeks ago, but now I am having second thoughts.

I would go with Waves for so many reasons.

But honestly, I doubt you can do anything wrong with either as long as your project is good.

Both technologies are stable and strong, each with its own specifics. And each will have its own niche in the future, where it will develop as a leader. The etherium has great odds and resources, but Waves has made its way
They largely serve the same niche, except that Waves serves the decentralized exchanges market on top of that. If Waves can provide a more efficient platform and a decentralized exchange, it could easily surpass Ethereum.

Now somehow the whole crypt in one niche, I was talking about a trend that is already visible, the ether and Waves go their own way in the future

Waves has more potential then ERC20.
They have NG and they are going to release smart contracts soon. Then don't forget new dex which is really looking nice.

Hello,

I am creating a coin/ token and wondered, is there a downside to using waves to create it? Its only slightly easier to create vs an Ethereum based. We picked waves due to their DEX API, what does this community think?

If you take notice on the current tokens created during ICOs, lots of them are  choosing ethereum based. Lots of exchange for this one and wallets to. There are good reasons why most ICOs prefer erc20 rather than pos/pow or waves.

Since eth value were much stable than other alts, developers tend to trust it more to secure that it will not affect the volatility of value too much, especially if ico will run for long, in more than a months or so on ,and it will be hard to predict the value of waves unlike eth that didn't move too much to increase or decrease.

My experience has been that total noobs, I mean people with zero crypto background, can easily be taught to set up a waves wallet and seem very willing to do so and waves is just so dang cheap in an airdrop.  The prior discussions about lack of exchange adaption is very scary though.  That could be a deal killer.  On the other hand, it would be so easy to establish a market for noobs on the Waves Dex.  I'm getting ready to try another ICO, I wonder how the transaction costs compare too?

The ether is the dominant position in the market, the waves are good and they can be taken in the long run, as the development of the project will pull and the price, that is small, which will be supported by the fall. But in any case, this is a conversation of several years, not a couple of months

I think the tokens which are on the platform of ethereum are more preferable than the tokens which are on other platforms. In my opinion, it is extremely hard that an another platform can surpass the popularity of the platform of ethereum.

it is always good that you do your own research since you will find your own results and form your own opinion i prefer to use waves for new assets since they are very cheap, the fee for creating process is only 1 Waves, they're very easy and fast. A few minutes and your cryptocurrency is ready for trades, mass transfers etc and usually all tokens based on Waves standard are tradable on our DEX by default, they have very low fee for transfers, including mass transfers, so if you want to make smth like airdrop, then it will be much cheaper than on Ethereum standard.

ERC-20 is more preferable in the real time for me, waves are not so convincing and confident on the cryptocurrency market, but it could be in the top.

there are so many wallets but for me I'll choose ERC20 because we know it's more wallet and it's easier to use even if he accepts any tokens. so it's best to use ERC20

In a simple term ERC20 is like Bitcoin while WAVE is like any other crypto, yes ERC20 is more acceptable and compactable, i will always go for it maybe with time i shall see more benefit of WAVE

Waves is continuously growing. In fact, I have some tokens in my wallet that using waves platform. But still I aware more in using ethereum as it is my first known altcoin and power house of smart contracts. Ethereum convinced me the way it is usable and many tokens are preferred to be alligned with ethereum blockchain.

With atomic swap on Waves you'll able to swap from ERC20 to Waves and back.

ERC20 token on ethereum stage has unquestionably overshadow the development and the presence of Waves token. Over 90% task is been started and finished up on ethereum stage utilizing ERC20 as a token for ventures! What's more, is it is, this advancement shows up not to back off that is the reason ether the cash of ethereum will stay profitable in the market!

waves is the initial amount to be funded whilst making coin switch , it wishes 30 USD to buy waves before you may do waves based on totally tokens transactions, in contrast to erc20- ethereum based totally token, it only want at the least .01ETH or three Usd to make token transaction as for gas processing, and it simplest wishes .001 ETH to filled-up that gasoline to make token transfer, however, that .001 is largely sufficient for the fuel it can make more than a hundred token transactions not like waves, each token transactions want .001 waves which more luxurious to all.

Wow, great feedback. Nice to see this is still going. We did build on Waves, and found it hard to raise capital. We created a mobile private key wallet https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cryptocashhub.concierge&hl=en_US (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cryptocashhub.concierge&hl=en_US) and a point of sale which allows for the purchase of normal goods and services with crypto. We found it easy to build off the api with provided documentation and eventually migrated to our own Mainnet. Would love for feedback on the app. Thanks again for all the info.

You can easily create on ethereum and migrate to any other blockchains later, instead of waves i would have preferred stellar...

Erc20  token on ethereum platform beats waves simplistic platform down many times over. The volume and amount of project based on erc20 is so high and cryptocurrency gas been made lively and new money have come in because of ethereum.

Whether you want to use ERC20 or wave or even EOS or NEO to issue your token, the most important thing is the role of your token. If you don't have a good use, then what you use is not important. Of course, ERC20 is definitely better than waves.

ERC20 uniquely stronger than the waves. I do not remember projects on the basis of waves that later successfully ended. Although now on etherium projects also do not really shine. P.s. to comparison, you can also add NEO.

In my experience every waves token I earned doing bounty has revealed totally useless and with nearly 0 liquidity... so if I were you I would choose ERC20.

Waves is far behind with erc20 so far. At the moment, it is the most popular platform that meets the requirements of all users. Most of the successful projects are created on eth platform.

Waves very early to compete with Ethereum. At first, having started well, the waves stopped a little, but they put back the lost time. But they still do not threaten the positions of Ethereum.

Now ERC20 has 1684 (star) and other side waves has 37 (star).ERC20 Index is a tokenized index of cryptocurrency which tracks and invests in the 20-top ERC20 tokens. Weekly, profits are distributed in Ether between the top-20 holders of a ERC20 token.Waves is a custom blockchain tokens platform designed for large-scale business and consumer adoption. Waves was created to make the benefits of blockchain technology accessible to ordinary businesses and end users.

It is much more easier and cost efficient to create waves based token. At the same time ERC-20 based token is more common and will attract wide audience.
Don't hesitate to create erc-20 token, because waves doesn't perform.

Actually, waves also have a very great technology likely the ERC20. Waves are also easy to use for transaction and circulation. However, most ICOs use ERC 20 for their system. More use this. Therefore, it is probably that ERC is more popular and familiar. Many people prefer to the familiar thing to make it simpler. However, it doesn't mean that waves is not preferable. You can use this platform also for your system.

These two types of coin base are veyr popular with its upside condition. ERC20 is the most used platform for transaction and ICO project. This Ethereum based platform allows the projects to promote their tokens or coins interestingly. In fact, although waves actually also have a very potential platform, ERC-20 is still the most interested.

Unfortunately ERC20 is on ETH which has capacity problems & expensive transactions. So if your use-case needs speed and low cost then go with Waves. The platform as a whole is far more advanced and more safe than Ethereum.

The main reason is not about the comparison of scalability between both of the project but i must tell you about the real reason about that. Can you prove it if the waves is more secure tha ethereum platform? there was so many bugs and you must try to do audit to the waves platform. The adoption and demand is the main reason why a lot of people are choosing ethereum.

A lot of coins has been developed on ERC-20 and this has made the eth network too slow and being clogged at most of the times. Choose waves as it will be comparatively faster for transactions and low fees.

For many people will be more easy to accept and use Ethereum tokens. Because currently Ethereum platform is more used, and why? Because it is so easy and it will be hard for many people to learn how to use another platform.

But all that things will become useless if no on use it, it's what happened to waves. On the other hand, Ethereum still popular and people will keeps using Ethereum and ERC20 token, and so many ICOs and project using ERC20 right now, rarely use waves and I rarely saw a token based on waves listed on exchange.

In my opinion, ETH looks much more preferable than WAVES, if only because a huge number of tokens are created daily on the Ethereum platform. Many of them are quite promising. And in general, Vitalik Buterin's platform is the number two crypto-currency in the world, which is already a huge plus.

erc20 is clearly better than waves because I followed the two but the waves are very bad because of many ico tokens from the waves which I see fate has a lot of value because it is not developing while erc20 is very successful and some are successful even though the token price slightly decreased
ERC 20 is where I am popular with. It is the most preferable than waves, well developed and friendly for all users where we are familiar with the functions. Many projects are supported by it so it proved for being developed successfully and can be trusted platform where to keep tokens. Waves is not that popular in the market just during the time it first implemented.

you better choose ERC20 because ERC20 is a lot of enthusiasts and all of that is good for the continuity of the project that you are working on.
if you choose WAVES it is good too but maybe the applicant is lacking, and that does not guarantee the future of the token you made.

If I'm not mistaken the wave tokens are based on a platform similar to ETH, but I think they are paid with waves instead of gas or eth, so the fees are much higher, this is good because the projects tend to be much more solid, as many scams will go away because that initial fee.

I am more confident with ERC20-based coins than waves, my tendency to take an opinion like this based on the experience of getting paid bounty with platform-based coins waves and not appearing in exchange while at erc20 I always get an exchange to sell it

I lean toward ERC20 based token as opposed to waves based token. Firstly waves is less famous contrast with ERC20. Most of individuals get a kick out of the chance to purchase token from etherbased token. In fact they are more certain to purchase from ether based token. So that is the reason I will pick ERC20 to make my token more well known.

Maybe as today waves improve a lot of things an features in their system but in terms of securities and easiest way to use people will still go for the ERC20 not just because they are more popular than Waves platform but there are great things and cheaper transaction on ERC20 even they are same that good even for Ethereum they are preferred to used ERC20 using gas and instead of waves platform that use waves.

ERC20 is the most popular platform as I can see from statistics and common amount of news and discussions. I like this one and I hope that it will be developed larger and deepper because it is really good potential with its volumes. Waves are promising as well but people trust to ERC20 more I suppose.
