I may be over my head but I saw a commercial the other day about a penny auction site or something and I said why don't we chip in as a community and start an ad campaign on TV.

I would simply make a site and everyone could send me their BTC  ;D just kidding..we could give it to Gavin or someone to take care of it.

Just an idea...hope I don't get to heavily criticized for this one..

There is already a national radio campaign running.
I think if we were to do a TV commercial,  we need to choose the show it will air on very carefully.
Any ideas?

Maybe Freedom Watch would be a good, or John Stossel's show.

I think radio would be more effective.  Think anywhere those gold coin guys advertise would be the right market, no?

Every penny on that commercial you're talking about is actually a $1. It costs a $1 to bid one penny. So next time you watch it and they say... "hey, i got this laptop for only $48.02", or "hey, we got this 60" TV for only "66.58", they are actually saying the community of people paid $4802.00 for the laptop and $6658.00 for the TV. It's nothing but gambling. You keep sticking a dollar in the slot machine, but the machine reads one more penny for every dollar you put in.

I looked into this when i saw the commercial.

Bitcoin isn't quite ready for any sort of advertisement, it needs some more refinement, and some more core services before everyone should know about it.

Especially because ads about bitcoin always tend to focus on price increases, which makes it sound like a ponzi scheme. That's about the worst thing you can talk about.

Commercials for bitcoins would be weird. Thats like having a commercial about the dollar. ""USE THE DOLLAR!!! ITS GOVERNMENT BACKED!!!!"" What would be good is commercials of companies saying that they accept bitcoins as payment.

What would the commercial say?

There has to be a specific use for BTC. The "Mt Gox Stock Market Game" won't appeal to many people as a killer app.

We need an official product/ecosystem that encourages people to spend. Then, make commercials about the product that uses BTC.

Yeah..just a huge ripoff really. Needing to buy the bids first JUST to place a bid. Easy way to lose a lot of money.

The most wise approach was shown by memorydealers.com. They place add about themselves, and mentioned that they  accept BTC. There is no better approach for now.

I'd like Bitcoin to not get any more publicity until we get a very different client and set of services that are (at least nearly) idiot-proof.
