Title: The Bitcoin Conquest
Post by: smeagol on June 09, 2013, 10:19:31 PM
Instead of making the Bitcoin town in New Mexico, let's seize Western Sahara!  Morocco claims it, but nobody else recognizes it!  It also has over 1100 km of coast so we could build a settlement there.  Who's with me?

The western Sahara has 1100 km of coastline on the Atlantic.  The first settlement should and would be on the coast not in the middle of the desert.

Well since it was my suggestion I am of course with you, but it shouldn't and wouldn't be conquest.  Migration and settlement is what it should be.  The land is mostly empty wilderness and we wouldn't be claiming statist authority over all of it, just claiming private property by homesteading only over the land we actually settle and utilise.  Lockean homesteading, you know?  We will of course need to be able to defend our claims but if we are not claiming the whole western sahara then we are less likely to be challenged.

Ooh!  We can be the founding users!
What if we are attacked though?

I'm picturing the South Park episode where Cartman and friends went to Somalia to become "pirates."

Let me know how that works out for you...

Disputed territory doesn't mean "allow a bunch of Westerners to settle here" . . . Western Sahara would be tough as well, since there's no arable land. Importing all food isn't precisely sustainable.

You don't have the moral right to settle other peoples land, regardless of the exact claims that you are making.

"Disputed territory doesn't mean "allow a bunch of Westerners to settle here" is right.

If you are American note that most of America is empty. There are no shortages of places to settle in your own country.

At least you won't be the first to make that mistake:

Renault: And what in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.
