Title: What do you think about Bitcoin ATMs?
Post by: Bitcoin ATM Project on October 23, 2017, 05:01:34 AM
Have you ever used one? What were the fees and the experience like, and would you use one again? Is there one nearby where you live?

I used one when traveling because I knew about it and just wanted to try it.
I already knew about the astoundingly high fees and for that reason I would never use it again. The fees are ridiculous, so I just used it for the experience, which wasn't bad.

Yet there aren't many people who know about Bitcoin and they need to cover their expenses somehow, it's not like they can do anything else.
Otherwise I agree with the idea and I find Bitcoin ATMs very convenient, but as I said they should have reasonable fees. The one I used was around 15-20%.

I never used it, but when I went to Hongkong last week, I suddenly found this kind of equipment, and I think the main thing is to let everyone have an experience. Really, it takes a long time to spread it.

They're only good for being used as a billboard for Bitcoin.

I'd never use one to buy or sell bitcoin, the fees are incredibly high...it's insulting to us! Bitcoin is meant to be an alternative to a fee heaving currency system. Any mechanism that drives up fees for a transaction is bad for Bitcoin.

Nowadays ATMs for Bitcoin are made just for fun and advertising purposes since the fees are just unbelivably high! But I'm quite sure that we are going to see more of them in the future and when there is more competition - the fees will go down.
ATM is not how it was supposed to work like, but they definetely have a future - sometimes you just need to have some fiat right now.

This is exactly right. Most of their utility is in advertisment; the actual ability to dispense Bitcoin is just secondary. I mean, I guess they're nice for when you need Bitcoin in a pinch, but that should barely ever happen. Everyone has internet everywhere nowadays, and exchanges offer much better rates.

The problem with Bitcoin ATMs is that their operational expenses is too high. Unlike banks, which don't really use ATM machines to try to earn money directly, the actual Bitcoin ATM and operational costs are financed by the owner and is geared towards making money. Bank ATMs simply serve as a way to keep clientele happy so they could attract more and more customers, while Bitcoin ATM owners can't find incentive in that.

There's also the fact that Bitcoin is digital so you don't need it in physical form, unlike fiat, so while the idea is cool, I also think it's somewhat unnecessary.

That's what we are trying to do is get more Bitcoin ATMs out there, and with low enough fees to make them attractive. For those of you that used machines, did you buy or sell? Did the machines have a sell option available? It seems like that's where the value would be, for people that already own crypto and maybe are traveling or just need fiat quickly - and with a low fee this could be reasonable.

I HAVE NEVer seen one and it would be something worth noticing and amezed about as this would be very helpful indeed. once there is an atm for bitcoin then everythong would be easier and you can encash it on the go especially if you lost your physical manny for some reason

The ones that I've come across were absolutely not worth to use!  The fees were unbelievable.  Both of them were marked up 25%, ridiculous.  It's nice to see them in public places because it makes it more mainstream and more people can know about Bitcoin.  However, I feel like these ATM's pray on uninformed people who do not understand the world of Bitcoin, so they jack up the price because they know people will still buy it even with the ridiculous marked up price.

Btc ATM might come in handy if you need to encash it and needs cash asap. Never tried it though. But with the wallet I am using they offer Cardless ATM for converting your btc into fiat. They offer cash out service which is facilitated by a bank that acts as a third party. Good thing here is there is NO FEE for this service and you can immediately withdraw your cash once you received all necessary informations needed. From the wallet, you just have to fill up some info such as your full name and mobile number where they will send 3 sets of digits that you will need to input in the ATM.

Not to be confused though, the ATM I'm saying is the usual machine of the bank and not really an exclusive btc atm.

For my purposes, a Bitcoin ATM is irrelevant. Major exchanges are all able to connect to my bank account, and even if they didn't, Bitcoin funded debit cards have lower fees and can withdraw in your local currency out of traditional ATM's. If you want your coffee shop in the news for a day, a Bitcoin ATM will probably do it.

There is a bit of complexity around bitcoin buying, selling, trading and storing. At least from simplicity prospective, it will be useful. As claimed, you can keep equivalent of bitcoin, something like bearer instrument in the form of QR code printed on paper.

Not yet, I didn't see any bitcoin ATM here close to my location I'm only watching videos of people that are trying to use those bitcoin's ATM and I feel jealous just for watching it.

What were the fees and the experience like, and would you use one again?

Base on what I've watched, they are just like the same as the wallet exchanges that we've been using as their service. If I were just the ones that has an experience I will gladly going to tell it to everyone and I guess I really have to try it out and visit one of it soon.

I heard we have 2 bitcoin ATMs here in my country but I never visit it and I never use it because the location is really far from my place, I want to try it though. I also heard that the fee on bitcoin ATM is quite high so be ready for it when you want do transaction on bitcoin atm.

I've seen a lot of them but only used one once.
I had to pay a few bucks and I really didn't want to touch my stash or "dirty" my coins.
Not that I was buying something illegal but the place was shady enough......

But I would probably never use an ATM again as the fees are right outrageous with 7 to 12% which is pure daytime robbery. No matter how long it takes I'll use exchanges and bank transfers. As for cashing out all of them here require an id card so no anonymity no advantages.

I have not used one and I heard that the price is a lot higher than regular exchanges and sometimes than Localbitcoins.

I believe the BTM business model is not that feasible and a better way to go about it is to keep all transactions online by having a website/exchange that accepts debit cards and OTC deposits.

Maintenance costs will be lower and you will have minimal hardware upkeep which can be an inconvenience.

I have used Bitcoin ATM once because of curiosity, the time of transaction was fast and it is very user friendly, you can also see some instructions on how to use it but I'm not planning to use it ever again because it charges big amount of percentage of Bitcoin you transacted. It also hard to locate Bitcoin ATMs here in my location and if you found one sometimes it's not functioning. I won't waste my time finding and using Bitcoin ATMs again since there are lots of options here to buy and sell Bitcoins with lower transaction charges.

What if they were in decent locations like say Wal-mart's across the country? Or on college campuses? To reach out to the general public to make Bitcoin more mainstream, but with fair enough fees people weren't getting ripped off and it was worth the convenience of being able to buy or sell instantly without waiting for an exchange or using human interaction?

I agree most people don't need Bitcoin instantly and the exchange fees will always be cheaper but what about the people out there who aren't so tech savvy, say older demographics who may be more inclined to trust a machine than have to figure out using a website?

As most of members here - straight forward ATMs is good just for marketing, thats it.
Something like crypto wallet with option to change to fiat could be interesting but that would be similar to app. Thus it seems ATMs is worthless in crypto sense.

I have not used one yet. In my town there isn't any, but there are some in larger cities. My friend have used it few times, and he said it was easy and fast. I believe him, I see no reason why it would be any different than classic ATM. I think that it is good to have some ATMs in case you need fiat currency. But hopefuly there will be more places which will accept Bitcoin as way of payment.

They can be a good way if you for "reasons" need to get cash anonymously. I've tried one in Finland, it worked fine, fees were like 8% (or so?). For me they have no use, if I need cash for some reason (very unlikely) I can load BTC to my prepaid card and use any ATM to get the cash. Much lower fees that way.

Bitcoin ATM would be interesting since an account would only say the amount of bitcoin a user has. An Bitcoin ATM should project the current price of bitcoin so that one would know if it is fair for him or not. It should would only depend if your country legalized bitcoin for it will use the current currency a country have since it will be much harder if it is on other countries currency that a Bitcoin ATM will give. I get pretty excited if one of those is actually available in the Philippines.

Many countries don't have a Bitcoin ATM but that might be a good business to get into if you have the capital or the connections to start building a bitcoin ATM network. People are still worried about the uncertainty if their countries are going to regulate or ban Bitcoin. For what I understand many countries are using localbitcoins to buy bitcoins with cash.

some of you have valid concerns on fees but purchasing at an ATM. Nowadays www.coinatmradar.com lists live rates for over 1000 ATMs worldwide. In the past operators primarily ran a Bitcoin ATM as a service to the community but nowadays it is more a business like installing vending machines or fiat ATMs and many operators have a large number of machines.

If an ATM does not display its rates on coinATMradar, think twice before plunking down that cash. :) Some ATM industry stats on fees can be found here: https://coinatmradar.com/charts/#fees and https://coinatmradar.com/charts/#by-manufacturer

Bitcoin ATM's are different from country to country so you can never tell. Using one is a matter of action. Do it and tells us your experience. Turning us into guinea pigs will just make it harder for you to obtain a reliable information.

There is still no bitcoin atm here in my country.  But considering the services given by our wallet, it is okay if we do not have an atm but it would be more better if we have.  It will raise awareness and curiosity if there would be a bitcoin atm for those who do not know bitcoin and not heard anything about it.  I guess there is no need here in our country for that since we can directly pay services like bills through our wallet.  We can convert our bitcoin into cash using different banks and remittances centers.

Precisely not only to get Bitcoin, but also make it easier for beginners who have Bitcoin and exchange their Bitcoin with an existing ATM machine, to make money in their own country, so people who do not understand to exchange their Bitcoin on online exchange sites, Simply Easy, come to the ATM machine, they can exchange it there.

The machine itself and the maintenance are quite costly. Add the fact that usage is rather low, those operating these machines need to cover their costs somehow and make their investment profitable. That being said, I'm not ok with 15-20% fee. That's outrageous. The only thing that can greatly lower fees is adoption on a larger scale.

There are only 4 bitcoin ATM's on our country and most of the time, they are offline. I wonder how a machine seldom used can get so used up, talk about inefficient. Also, as said by the other, fees are high and is almost used only for decoration as not many bitcoin users utilize its services. IMO, bitcoin ATM's although not wrong, the idea doesn't feel quite right with me since in the first place ATM's are used for fiat withdrawals--even though fiat and bitcoin are completely different.

A long time ago I was in the Cryptoanarchy Institute (https://www.paralelnipolis.cz/koncepty/cryptoanarchy-institute/) in Prague.  They have a cafe that accepts only BTC, some meeting rooms where a lot of edgy groups like Anonymous meet on problems like net neutrality, and of course an ATM to help people get involved.

It's useful to help people get interested and it's a very convenient way of getting BTC.  There are usually very high fees, but to just walk up to there and deposit some cash it's considered acceptable.

They're very good for criminals as well, since all you have to deposit is cash (or BTC) and it doesn't involve verifying your identity.  As well as keeping the source of your BTC anonymous, it also means that there's no limits to the amount you can deposit and withdraw from the ATM.  If you're someone who buys drugs or other illegal goods on a regular basis, or you just need privacy for other reasons, it's ideal.

I suppose what they're best for though is the companies that create them, with the fees that they have.

Thinking about buying BTC in austria in a cheap way and then pick up YEN at an ATM in Tokyo next year.
Have to check the prices and compare with currency exchange at local dealer.

nope, there is no atm bitcoin here. If there is, it is good if there is no fee at all. Especially when we use what btc wallet we are using and they are offering atm. It is good if there is no fee. Fee for an atm is quite okay, but everytime we want to cash out maybe much better if there is no fee.  So many users will use that btc wallet for them to have easy transaction for cash out.

There are only a few of them and they are charging at least 10% fee or more... It's quite high, so I'm not surprised that the usage is low. You can't rely on them, because they're offline randomly. If the mass adoption of bitcoin happens, and paying by smartphones will be the part of the everyday routine, maybe the ATMs will be more popular

I have heard about ATM Bitcoin, this is quite interesting. In my country there are also but I have not been directly used because it is only placed in a limited number of places. As far as I know, these machines do not actually extract the Bitcoin, but it just changes the Bitcoin you have in your local currency to use. I think these machines are probably for promoting, introducing Bitcoin to everyone. There will be many people who are excited and curious about Bitcoin ATMs, which makes Bitcoin more and more popular. I think so  ;D

Bitcoin ATM is a good idea indeed. Though I never used one because there's no bitcoin ATM in our country. But I would love to try, hopefully if this was implemented in the future, the fees wont be that big or hopefull it is the same with fiat atm, no fees needed.

I am not seeing any bitcoin ATM right now because in my city there is chance for placing this machine but I think soon if there is many people is join with bitcoin, then maybe there will be bitcoin ATM. I guess I will waiting until there is any statement from my government about bitcoin legality so there is third party like local exchanges or local seller is trying to place bitcoin ATM in every place on my city. but I curious how the feel when we using this machine and how much the fee to make a transaction.

Well, there are fees when you withdraw cash on ATM's that are not their banks.  Bitcoin ATM just like what you said is a really good idea since it will not let people who uses bitcoin an opportunity to withdraw, transfer, pay and even sell their bitcoins but it will make sort of advertisement.  People will be curious on what bitcoin is because there is atm designated only for bitcoins.

I think that you should avoid it as much as possible. Bitcoin ATMs are businesses and therefore you are really not getting the real value out of your Bitcoin as its prices are in favor of the Businessmen. Although atms are convenient for people you will be on the losing side. Selling your Bitcoin with a real person is really the way to go. Make Bitcoin ATMs as your last resort when it comes to converting your currency.

#This is exactly right. Most of their utility is in advertisment; the actual ability to dispense Bitcoin is just secondary. I mean, I guess they're nice for when you need Bitcoin in a pinch, but that should barely ever happen. Everyone has internet everywhere nowadays, and exchanges offer much better rates.

But I think that the government will lay the price in taxes and therefore to withdraw cash from these ATMs will not be very profitable. Can anyone say what is the exchange rate at ATMs?

I used one when traveling because I knew about it and just wanted to try it.
I already knew about the astoundingly high fees and for that reason I would never use it again. The fees are ridiculous, so I just used it for the experience, which wasn't bad.

Yet there aren't many people who know about Bitcoin and they need to cover their expenses somehow, it's not like they can do anything else.
Otherwise I agree with the idea and I find Bitcoin ATMs very convenient, but as I said they should have reasonable fees. The one I used was around 15-20%.

That was a big hell of a fee for an ATM machine. I think they should have a fix fee for this kind of transactions which are evidently useful to every bitcoiners around the world.  It would be nice if other altcoin will be available on it rather than trading from people to people.

Only a few scattered in my country, basically it's just exchanging your Bitcoin to another company that wishes to own it more. I think they are hardly sustainable as licensing such businesses and remain profitable is difficult when local banks are dominant. Maintaining a large cash flow to restock these ATMs is one of the major problems, not to mention the operational costs which might crumble their owners if Bitcoin's price is down. Digital money is meant to be used digitally and such ATM's implement wouldn't fit well.

I wish these ATM are able to support other currencies as well, maybe depositing cash for purchasing BTC with a receipt and claim it online would be lovely.

I think the existence of the bitcoin atm very well if it is realized and installed in several countries due to the presence of bitcoin atm that makes us in exchange transactions bitcoin directly (for those who do not believe online) especially for the new user. make it easy for us to get the appropriate cash local currency via atm and bitcoin unnecessary difficulty finding enough foreign money exchange digital money into local currency. bitcoin atm this will really help and make technological advances that are qualified in the present nor the future.

I have never seen a bitcoin atm before in real life but I've seen a few videos about them, and the users have not been satisfied because of the high fees. I think they are just helping to increase the bitcoin's popularity now. People have to be very careful about the exchange rates before using that machines, because you can make a really bad trade unconsciously by that machines. I think that technology must be improved and the ways of reducing the high fees must be found.

I have not used one and I don't think I am going to use any for several reasons though:

1. Visa and MasterCard have stopped their support to ATMs backed by crypto currency in my region at this maybe in the future they may revisit their decision.

2. Even if they revisit their decision, I still won't use it because of the implicit charges embedded in it which to me, is too expensive for someone like me to bear. From the site that will load it fee, the card maintenance fee, the local bank ATM fee which will be on the high side because its going to be treated as using foreign ATM in a local setting.

So are you saying Bitcoin itself is bad for Bitcoin? Bitcoin is designed to have fees and so the "mechanism" that drives up fees for a transaction is already in the Bitcoin algorithm.

But I'm quite sure that we are going to see more of them in the future and when there is more competition - the fees will go down. It is a bright idea so government must support it.

There is a bit of complexity around bitcoin buying, selling, trading and storing. At least from simplicity prospective, it will be useful. As claimed, you can keep equivalent of bitcoin, something like bearer instrument in the form of QR code printed on paper.

I guess this is true. It might be the simplest way for newbies to get their first bitcoins since they'll be skipping steps on exchanges and the like. This might be its most useful function.

I guess it is essential and wise to have bitcoin ATMs because  I have used Bitcoin ATM before because of curiosity, the time of transaction was fast and it is very user friendly, you can also see some instructions on how to use it but I'm not planning to use it ever again because it charges big amount of percentage of Bitcoin you transacted. It also hard to locate Bitcoin ATMs here in my location and if you found one sometimes it's not functioning. It is very good.

But once bitcoin would get more widespread and know by the common people, I don't see the need for them any longer.

I think it is not an automated teller machine per se but is similar to a vending machine. It is because you do not get money from it (from your own Bitcoins/Bitcoin wallet) but you are in fact buying Bitcoins. "Buying" here means you still do not own it. It is just like a physical store where you can buy Bitcoins should you desire to purchase one.

Though i haven't used some before and i doubt i will be using it anytime soon, cashing out your bitcoin will take a lot of time considering that the bitcoin you sent will have to be confirmed before you can actually get payment. I will rather cash my bitcoin out through exchanges and its faster because i will not want to be waiting at a particular spot for fifteen minutes to get my money.

Fortunately, my bitcoin wallet provider has an option of cashing-out my bitcoins to fiat via an ATM to a specific bank. Personally, I find it very convenient since it gives me the option of having extra cash when traveling, or for emergency purposes. I mainly use my bitcoins for buying academic related things in my university, which greatly helps my parents into limiting their expenses. Having an international ATM that supports bitcoin-fiat transaction or conversion would be beneficial to all holders especially students like me who utilize this as extra-money.

Have never used one, but wouldn't if the fees are 20%. Kind of defeats the purpose of bitcoin being descentralized if you then have to rely on a centralized atm machine owner taking a massive cut. Good on them for spreading the technology though.
