Title: 5870 FANS do not want spin at MAX though 100% RPM is FORCED!!!
Post by: RedLine888 on June 27, 2011, 05:13:38 AM
Hi!

There is a problem with my HD 5870 V2 and I hope you guys wil help me.

I have 4 cards in a rig 3xGiabyte 5870 and one HD 5870 V2. Generally I run them 3x960\365 and 990\365\1.3v and set those parameters via clocktweak. Everything runs fine BUT then something happens and the fan of HD 5870 V2 suddenly lowers rpm to ~700 though in AB its shown that it is 100%. Clocktweak shows that it is only 15% of its max speed.

Afetr this I can not tweak the card via clocktweak. It says me ERROR: write_values: xxxxxxxxxx whatever I do.
But I can tweak a card via AB for example though fan still spins at ~700 rpm while displayed as 100% in AB.

All the cards are crossfired.

How to overcome this whatever it is?

This has just happened to another card

One of Gigabyte cards now. Fan spins at ~1500 rpm while max is ~3500.

WTF is happening...

Help please.

Remove the blue wire on the fan 4pin. No need for software.

its the driver, somehow the fan spins down as soon you start mining, but the software is its still reporting 100%.

it does happen to all my cards, in both Linux and Windows, except under WinPE.

Can't remove the blue wire 'cause card is still under warranty(

How are the temperatures? I just leave my fan speed on auto, keeps temps at ~85c

my fan spins at ~700 rpm from total ~4500 and GPU easily reaches 100C then system crashes.

You people and your warranty's. You don't have to cut it simply pry back a small plastic leg that holds the blue wires pin in and remove it. Tape it up the exposed pin lead and connect it back to the header. Your card manufacture will thank you.

So is it never going above 700RPM now (where it did before), or does it just drop to 700RPM after working for awhile (and rebooting fixes the issue)?

If it won't ever go above 700RPM, and it did before, and rebooting doesn't help, then the fan may have died. It happened on one of my Sapphire 5850's; the fan suddenly became very stiff and won't go to its maximum RPM anymore.

Looks like it is dead(

Tried all the combinations even removing the blue wire as advised above but did not succeed in the end!

RIP!

Tomorrow will give it back by warranty terms.

By the way! Something may have happend suddenly 'cause I started to have problems today in the morning and now its evening in my country and I have 3x5870 which refuse to work properly though everything was fine yesterday!

One is EAH5870 V2 which has 700rpm fan problem.
And two GV-R587 one of which boots up till "Startnig Windows" and then I can hear welcome sound bit the picture hangs on "Startnig Windows" screen! The other just makes my PC hang on boot!

Now my rig mines with a single GV-R587 which I hope will live long life...

A bad day I have today(((

Are there any opinions on what may have happened to them?

Sounds like the cards are fried. Good luck with warranty because the video card manufacturers are starting to consider it as abuse and won't cover it anymore. This explains why there are dead cards showing up for sale on ebay. How many times do I have to say this until people will finally listen? NEVER run a fan (that cools a crucial component) at 100% for 24/7

but I cooled them well!!!

The temp never was more than 90.

85-86 but 100% fan and GPU load 24/7

But but but...and look what happened. You shouldn't have to run your fan that high to get those temps in the first place. Even with 100% fan those temps are way too high. I can run 6950's at 40% fan temps in the mid 60's. It is all about having good airflow with the proper case.

Yes dude, sorry to say it but I think you fried your 5870.. 1.3v @ 85c gpu core temp means your vrm/vddc/shader temps were possible over 100C
I did the same to a sapphire vaporx 5870, got it to 1.33v 1000/350 and it was sitting perfect @ 74C for about 2 weeks then it just died.

By the way, I dont think running the fans at 100% will cause them to fail so soon. Unless someone can provide good statistics write ups or reviews..
But I have been running 100% fan for almost 5 months now and no issues, just turn the pc off every 2 weeks to clean the fans from dust etc.

so what should I do when get new cards?

Keep them around 65C with no 100% fan and no everclocking?

How did you manage to cool them that well?

How long did you run these ones for 100%?

It may have been better if I removed that piece of plastic with its tiny fans from my GV-R587 cards and put Ultra Kazes on each...

Will do so if my cards will return from the reseller in shape)

A good case with proper airflow

What case and fans do you use? Their placement?

Please tell all the details.

1.3v on air ? you're brave. That sort of voltage should be use when watercooling imo.

Also I disagree with the point that a manuf. considers it abuse to run a fan at 100% 24/7. Fans have tens of thousands of hours MTBF. Running fans full speed, for a long long time might wear out the bearings....but I don't consider this abuse - running the poor card @ 1.3v under full load is.

For a few hours benchmarks its fine, but 24/7 no card is going to last long at that voltage with the stock HSF

Try telling that to new miners who never built a system before, or might've just been casually gaming at most.

It doesn't matter if your core temp shows 70-80c in afterburner.

The card *will* die with that voltage in a few months, maybe even weeks. And there are examples on the forum if you have the motivation to search for these 2-week-wonders.
