Title: Total number of ethereum
Post by: ridertiger on October 24, 2017, 12:15:27 PM
Circulating supply is 95,292,838 ETH according to coinmarketcap.com
I read somewhere that they are producing 18 million ETH per year.
So, when is this going to end and how many ETH in total will we have?
Now that we have this byz fork, do you expect ETH prices to rise soon and why?

there is none!

this is one of the biggest flaws in my opinion about ethereum. from early days it has been asked a lot of times from the developers to clarify on the cap of ethereum but nothing has been set. there has been some talk about setting some but never became true.

although it is kind of justifiable too. they say ETH is not a currency to have a supply like this and limited. it is a token that you should only use to go in smart contracts and it needs to be unlimited because of the way it is being used in them.

but as an investment, unlimited supply will lead to a fate like Dogecoin.

How about that ice age stuff when difficulty rises to a level that it is impossible to mine?
And when do we go to Proof of Stake, which basically tells people to hodl, rather than sell?
These two are factors that should raise the price.

you can sort the cryptocurrencies on coinmarketcap by "total supply". The page you are looking when you visit the site is only circulating supply, total supply is the below

https://coinmarketcap.com/coins/views/market-cap-by-total-supply/ (https://coinmarketcap.com/coins/views/market-cap-by-total-supply/)

You'll see there that ETH is set to 95 million, the founder, Vitalik has already announced that there will be no additional coins created after PoS (proof of stake) has been implemented. What that means is that instead of "creating" new coins after each block is mined (which part was given to the one's who mined the block), user will be able to earn a passive income just by holding ETH in their wallet, which means that mining and the necessary costs of electricity won't be necessary anymore. I think ETH price will rise as the hard fork has been succesful and no major bugs were found, it implemented some cool features, such as zsnakrs will will help the price in the short and long term as well.

Please the metropolis hardfork part 1 already done and the ethereum developers already put the difficulty bomb in there, and that will be activating at the q1 of the next year if you are seeing about the ethereum roadmap.
So, the ethereum just about the time to go to the POS implemented and that means there will be no inflation again and the total supply can be determined soon.

I think you miss some thing..

Difficulty bomb was activated and was de_activate after metropolis . I do not have info when it will reactive again .
Block reward was reduced from 5->3 eth
