Title: Is it totally safe and ok to show my deposit bitcoin address to the public?
Post by: wasabibit on October 24, 2017, 07:48:25 PM
Hi,

I have seen many people on many websites posting their BTC/ETH addresses publicly for donations.
Is it absolutely ok and safe to show them? I think so but just wanted to get some opinions from experienced people.

Thanks

yes its perfectly afe to display your address.
But the thing here is unless and untill you donot hold a lot of wealth on that particular address.
Cause you know hackers you will become a target then.
See this BTC/ETH address are basically free ,so lots of people people use multiple address for multiple purpose.
I hope now you understand what you have to do.
Never reveal your main wallet..:P

Well, this depends strictly on the purpose for which these addresses are being publicised. Fine! hackers or scammers all over, any rational pertaker should ensure taking cognisance of that. So, If not for a definite purpose , I see no reason for pubilicly disclosing your eth adresses, not to even talk of wallets safe probably for application or transactionary motives between or among members in d forum. The choice is yours.

Yes. That's what addresses are for. I personally think that the only reason for hiding your addresses is if you want more privacy. For example, if you do not want your coins to be linked to your identity.

If you want to disclosure an address for donations, there is nothing to worry about.

Good luck in hacking the bitcoin address in my signature.
There is 0.00 bitcoins in it.
For some reason I don't believe hackers will find it very interesting.

In addition to that, bitcoin addresses are impossible to hack  ;D

A Bitcoin address can be compared to your Bank account number at a Bank. You can give that address to anyone, without exposing your PIN/Password or your Private key. So yes it is safe to give your Bitcoin address to people. <This is why they call it a Public address>

You might become a target, if you stored 1000s of bitcoins in that address and hackers or scammers link your real identity to that address. This is why I store 80% or more of my bitcoins on paper wallets. Even if they ID me, they will never get to those coins. I store them away from my home in a secret location. ^lol^

That's okay, as long as you don't show your username and password on that account your bitcoin is safe. I'll give you my bitcoin address
and you can send me some. :D just kidding!

FYI. Coinmarketcap.com is asking for those as well. Do you think coinmarketcap will stay afloat after all these years if it is not safe? Are they going to ask for donations if it is not safe. Actually it is infinitely safer than MIOTA and your Bank Account. MIOTA wallet once used. It will not be safe anymore. While with your bank account even SWISS BANK ACCOUNT is vulnerable to blackmail, bribery and torture.

Yes sir it is safe as long as you don't show your private key of your address on public. The security of your wallet address is on that private key just keep it secret and save it to safe place. And everything will be fine.

There is no problem about that and it was ok and safe, even it showed in public they can not access your wallet it is just an address of your wallet to received the fund for your method to earn bitcoin or any other crypro currency coin. Specially if you are joining in signature/bounties campaign you need to give to the manager your address to make able to send your token/bitcoin as your salary.

If you use a bitcoin wallet with an optional secondary "false login" for plausible deniability, so you can login when forced to under duress and show them a fake balance, then I think the bitcoin wallet (and it's public address, shared or not) may be even more "physically" secure then the other nonblockchain backed "physical" account types, like you mentioned. Otherwise the vulnerabilities you mentioned still apply.

It's think it's safe to have at least one public address for all your public payments like donations and weekly/monthly payments for signature campaigns.
When I freelance I tend to always give a my client a different deposit address just to ensure we have an additional layer of security.

Please don't post shit, do you have any idea about bitcoin wallet? Can currently any hacker huck it? If yes, then there are wallets with 1000btc (usually they are filled for airdrops) and just check blockchain, you will find some of them, find a hacker and get some percent profit. ehh man, leaen on mistakes.
Also it's absolutely safe if you aren't using it for illegal reasons. For example if you are on darknet and publish deposit adress, you will be in huge trouble. On another hand no problem, but tracking is possible, I mean history of when you received money, where you sent and etc.

Yes, it is totally safe to show your address to other peoples.

You might need to understand three things behind your address.

1. Private key
Every address generated by bitcoin wallet, it generates a key pair: private key and public key. With some hash algorithm with your public key will get address. Anyone who owns private key means he is able to transferring your bitcoins to other peoples. Public key is very easy to be calculated by private key, so if you have private key and then you have all these three things.

2. Public key
After you transferred some bitcoins to other address, your public key is revealed with your transaction record to let other people/miner verify your signature to confirm your transaction is valid. To calculate a private key from public key is very very hard in current time, but it is possible. That's why an address is secure if it has no any out-coming transfer.

3. Address
It is easy to calculate (With hash algorithm of your public key) your address from public key, but it is impossible to get public key from an address only.

Private key --(easy)--> Public key --(easy)--> Address

Address --(impossible)--> Public key --(very very hard)--> Private key

:)
Have a nice day.

Yeah, what most people said here is correct; however, you need to understand that a public address is just that-- public.

If you were to post your address somewhere, there is no way for anyone to hack it, as everyone above said. On the other hand, everyone with your public address will be able to see all of the transactions you have been a part of with that address. That means that if you request money from some individual with an address and then use those bitcoins by sending them to some other address, the original sender (or anyone who knows this specific public address) will be able to see where you are sending those coins. The bright side is that usually this information means nothing as public addresses don't mean much and don't say who the address belongs to, but it is important to keep this in mind especially if you are to send bitcoins from your address to another public address that might be recognized by someone else. The network might be anonymous, but it is not as private as some marketing or advertising might make it sound. As long as you remember this you should be golden.

In some ways its even safer.  If you give someone a bank account number, they can perform an ACH debit transaction on it.  They need the routing number to do that but if they know where you bank, they can usually get the routing number for that bank.

A bitcoin public address for donations is not able to be accessed for sending transactions without the private key.

That being said, if a person were to look at your public address and find that it contains a lot of BTC, it could "inspire" them to try to figure out how to hack you to get your private key.  Even if they don't end up with the key, if you are not well secured you could have to deal with other consequences of their hacking attempts.

Best to use a public address that doesn't hold much BTC for a tipping address.

I don't think it is safe.  Any address or information you uploaded online will be of great threat especially if it involves money.  Bitcoins can be exchange for money so... to be safe, you need also to be cautious. Prudent in accounting...

It is safe to show your address in public its nothing to worry about, but one thing please do not share your private key, that is tragic if it's happen to you it might be the worst day of your business in bitcoin so please be careful to send your ETH/BTC/BCH etc. address. :)

Yes, the bitcoin talk profile suggest's that you post your address publicly because it is a sign that you already owning a bitcoin wallet. This is also a sign  that you are trusting the forum and its security. I have not yet heard a report about bitcoin being hacked because the security developers of bitcoin are very efficient. If you also publicly post your bitcoin address, that will be easy for those who are sending payments to your profile very fast. You must never post your private keys and passwords because from there, they can hack your account and they can get your accounts and they can steal your identity.

Ofcourse it's absolutely risk free to show the address to public because the security of our wallet address depends upon our private key and as long as it is kept secret there would be no problem and your account will be risk free and this also helps us when we want to get funds from others.

Yes its totally safe, No one can hack your bitcoin address by seeing it! Hacking bitcoin address is something impossible because of the cryptography used.
So don't worry about that. People can know how much of bitcoin you have using your address, but you can have multiple addresses and use each of them for
whatever you want.

Adress reuse is not recommended for privacy, but it is definitely secure.

Displaying your Bitcoin ID to public has nothing to do with people because everyone have no idea how many coins do you have in the first place. Nobody can figure out other data or information behind that number of alpha numeric ID unless you also post your keys (that's an impossible to happen though)
Secure your digital key because you wouldn't know what's going on with your device. But the safest way to secure your Bitcoin key is to use hardware key that is also can be bought online and your hardware key that the only thing or device that holds your Bitcoin key so there's no way hackers can get your key.

Adress reuse is not recommended for privacy, but it is definitely secure.

But how can you accept donations then? In order to accept donations, you need to make your bitcoin public address public, and everyone is going to be able to find out how much you got donated. For example, Wikileaks got more than 4,000 BTC donated, they have been using the same address since 2011, this is a huge problem. But what options did they have?

Is there any way to generate new addresses and guarantee that these addresses belong to you? For example, you click a "donation" button and a new address is generated each time. Im not sure this is possible without additional risks. This is hosted in a website so it could be hacked and pointed to ward's attackers keys so he receives the money.. for example.

Bitcoin still lacks privacy at protocol level.

I think its ok to show your bitcoin address to the public. As long as you keep your codes/password/or key private. Anyway the public cant do anything on your bitcoin address unless they want to send or donate some bitcoin on it, which is good on your part. But of course it still depends on your preference. If the address links to your identity, and you want it to be private, then don't post it on public. Your address is like your bank account online. Just like your bank account, you must keep it secure.

Nothing wrong to show your deposit address to the public. To keep thing private and safe you need to create a wallet only for this purpose where you will give people the bitcoin address where to receive money if you will receive donations. You can keep this address in a separate wallet while wallets with big balance in them remain strictly private to you.
