I live in a dorm that has untraceable power consumption and since I over pay for the low quality of it I'd like to have fun and tinker with Mining

Currently I have a GTX970 with I7 5280k....it hasnt been rebuilt since moving here. COuld I mine when not using it then keep it as my gaming computer when I want it?


If I was to invest in mining what would be a good set up taking into account energy efficiency is irrelevant...infact with winter coming may need the inefficent power plant to warm up my room

Personally, I think in your situation I would start using winminer right now and figure everything else out as I go.  You can download it and be mining in about 5 mins.  Very easy, you are paid in USD, you can stop the program anytime you want to game.

From there, I would start looking around for used gear.  Once you get past 2 cards it gets bulky and cumbersome.  Because you need so little as far as cpu goes, you can find a cheap old Athlon or Dual core and just add cards. 

What would be some of the highest output to purchase cost GPUs? I was hoping there would be some powerful ones that go cheap because they are power hogs

The most profitable miner when you have unlimited power isn't any GPU, but an ASIC. The Antminers will give you the quickest ROI if you can afford them.
And I'm not talking about Bitcoin, the D3 and L3 are amazing if you can get your hands on them.

But the most accessible would probably be the RX GPUs. Go for any Vega card you can find (not Frontier) or otherwise RX 500 series.

ROI on ASIC's go down a lot while GPUs tend to be more stable, so I wouldn't fully  agree with that statement. That being said D3 with first delivery date would be awesome.

My budget would probably range $500 for a 1 year ROI to 5k for a 1 month ROI

If the electricity is free, then it can be mined Zec with gtx 970 and monero for CPU. In fact, even with paid electricity is the best option

Bittawm is actually selling D3s for $2500 each right now with shipping included (reputable member in the computer hardware goods section). Just be warned these things (as do pretty much all miners these days) sound about as loud or louder than vacuum cleaners and you can really hear em. Spending a hundred bucks or so can get you some decent soundproofing, Philipma has a YouTube channel where he documents making some Avalon miners quieter. They went down to 60-63db or so iirc but still a little bit loud.

I have my 5280k CPU overclocked to 4.4 with liquid cooling....Would I need to turn it down? WIll it actually mine very much?

Yeah I couldn't give a you know what about either power efficiency or overall power consumption.....They cut so many corners in my dorm and I only save very little over my friends who live in amazing places so it serves them right hahaha

How long would it take to get a ROI

56 db    but op  check with sidehack  he can do s-7's  with a downclock this stops the noise issue/

Nvidia 1080ti is the best option if electricity is free. Kind of pricey tho.

yes, I'm totally agree with you here, this is the best option which is fast and power efficient
but... it became kinda hard to buy thing! and the price went up!
one could purchase asus strix for 750 from amazon 10 days ago and now price is 1000!!!

Its better than buying like 3 or 4 older radeons for the same price perhaps even less?

much better because you save a lot of space, it's very good for small farm that don't have space, i think nvidia is better now

You forgot in your calculations on the power supply. For work, the GPU needs a powerful power supply. It is not too little money. Better to know approximately what is the number of the GPU you intend to connect and to take the power supply with the ability to connect the required number of lines. You also need to understand that during the hours with the GPU there is noise from the fans. Your neighbors may resent.

You can use energy-consuming algorithms: X11Gost, Lyra2REv2 and Equihash. Maybe what else but it's basic.

Does the HD7990 or R9 295x2 still yield very high hashrates compared to the 480s or 1070s or 1080tis?

Also how is the Titan X in comparison to the 1080ti

These are good if you have fee electricity.

None can compete with 1080 ti, except in equihash (Ethereum) algos. Titan X is pretty much the same performance wise, while costing more.

After the release of 1070 ti regular 1070 prices may drop. 1070s might be the right choice for zcash. Amd rx prices are going down too, they gonna get you best performance for their price on eth if power consumption is free. Maybe Vega 56s for monero, but its not so stable atm.
