Title: $25,000USD reward for help : Stolen Bitcoin funds
Post by: foonj on October 25, 2017, 12:39:59 PM
Hi All,

Some dickcheese stole a lot of money from me. (this is only part of it). The other part is being investigated by another party already.

Here is the current Bitcoin wallet.

The funds got into this wallet after being moved out of ETH into BTC at Shapeshift.

Last known location of funds:

https://btc.com/1MHpbX54TitPe4rnCMJV7BpY8FrDjwMdzx

I'm offerring a $25,000 USD reward to anyone smart enough to track this person down. There has to be a historic transaction linking him to something, somehow or a future move this person makes that may help us identify them.

I'll pay the reward to anyone who can provide me with enough evidence to identify this person to law enforcement.

God Speed.

I am soo sorry man. This is terrible. I hope someone can be able to help even though I have yet to hear of someone get their stolen funds back. 13 Bitcoins is no small amount. I can imagine how devastated you must be. Do you know how you got compromised? It might be a good exercise to trace your steps back so as to prevent this from happening again.

That's only a fraction of what was stolen

Someone targeted me specifically by editing my hosts file and redirecting myetherwallet.com to a local copy of the site. Probably someone close to me.

We are following several leads.

https://www.myetherwallet.com/ is very dangerous, better use metamask or any other ether wallet like parity where you can protect yourself from phishing attack, I believe https://www.myetherwallet.com/ is the most phished website right now

really sorry for the loss hope you still be able to gain back confidence to get back that amount from trading or anything

If it's been stolen no one will be able to help you unless you contact the authorities and get them to look into the situation and hopefully the hacker slipped up some where.

There is nothing dangerous about it, as long as you just don't visit any phishing site.
But it's besides the issue, edited hosts files point to inside knowledge.

Keen to hear any updates, and sorry for the loss op .. let's hope it's a temporary one.

much easier to eliminate all chance of getting phished by using metamask or parity, especially if you hold huge amount of coin, I usually do not upload anything to myetherwallet, just use it to check my token

I really wish i could render some degree of assistance to you towards getting basck your stolen bitcoin but then i believe if it is located or traced to any exchanger, you should do well to contact the exchanger with the all the relevant transaction hash to proof your claim. thats the best i can advice.

Security is a huge issue in crypto currency, because as a individual it is up to you to keep your funds safe. You should check out my video on safety : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_e9zKlqngA&t=1s

Rules to live your life on:
Dont ever click links that direct you to a wallet
Set up security on your wallet etc
With anything over $10k you should really have a device you dont use to hold your coins.

I hope you can find your money, that is a lot to lose. Keep us updated

How much money have you lost in your wallet?
I do not think anyone can get this person because all the information on the forum and the market is fake and not real so you will never find him while you spend 250004 to Looking for a thief, I do not believe this is the truth, you are trying to fabricate this money

I check the last known wallet where funds are with wallet explorer, a website that links addresses to the wallets just to give you a clue but it was only used recently as address and it doesn't show up there.

I am afraid you cannot do much if the thief is an expert at bitcoin, he can use bitcoin mixers to mix different amounts, he can use gambling websites to mix different other amounts. Creating wallets its free so I am sorry for your loss but not much you can do.

How did the funds get stolen from this transaction. I assume you made this transaction and thief intercepted? A bit more detail will help those that are capable of tracking this "dickcheese" down.

Regarding phishing attacks, they do require the victim to click or bite, yeah? Or have they gotten more sophisticated?

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your loss. It sounds like a very sophisticated attack and probably an inside job of sorts. I hope law enforcement or a white hat who finds your post can offer assistance to you and bring this hacker to justice. Hopefully you still have other funds for investing or plenty left untouched.

You're right, they require you to click a link, you'll be redirected to a scam site (for example a site looking similar to mew), and when you login or fill in the required info they'll steal everything you've got.

You need to be root (=admin) to be able to edit hosts file, so it is probably someone who has access to your machine.
I have not heard of any remote malware that can do that. (probably some does exist though.)

Edit: I thought that hosts file exists only in linux, but apparently windows has one too. If you use linux the above comment stands, but not in windows.

Normally when bitcoins are stolen they are difficult to get back, because the thief could be in another country, where your country's law can't touch them.

Its just about phishers because they are changing the name of it that is looking like MEW. And for OP even though how big the reward is, we know that bitcoin/ETH transactions aren't reversible. If you know that someone whos close to you, you have to make your own investigation.

Bitcoin's aren't difficult to get back when it was stolen, we can't really recover it anyway because it can only be sent back if the hackers that stole your bitcoins will be returning it back to you. I think the only people that you can help you are the FBI and I haven't seen someone that offers this type of recovery services.

Thanks for all the comments.

I don't need to fabricate a story Vohoanghiep but thanks for your concern.

They made the mistake of moving some of the stolen funds to an exchange / and its more than they will be able to withdrawal without being KYC so we are following that lead.

Another token I hold was listed on a major exchange today and I have in fact quickly recovered my losses.

Not if your computer is RATTED, which i think is the case with @OP. There is no other way someone can edit your host files.

Shapeshift might be able to help you, if you provide the TX id, and a police report, they'll probably give you the userdata of they guy that did the transactions ( IP ).

Although i'm suspecting he would use a VPN, you never know and it might result in more information, people always leave digital fingerprints behind.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about that money no matter how you traced it from moving to once wallet address to another. You will only be able to view it but nothing can be done about it. That's one disadvantage of bitcoin if it were to be a bank, lodge a complain, get the proper paper works and that money can be retrieved or the perpetrator arrested and made to cough it out but here nothing of such can be done. Also it will get to a point where the money might not move again if the moved knows how to use a mixer.

At least you know that at the moment they are here :https://blockchain.info/es/address/112rLT4YpPzuNSstK3MyLQZe7khicQ88hL

You would have a problem if they used a bitcoin mixing service, most provably you could never track those BTC anymore

You don't have any proof, you could've sold them to some body and now you want your coins back because price increased. not that you really did what I just said. stolen or owned legitimately, any body with a private key is the only person controlling the funds. no service owner would reveal their customer's information to just random people. you might have a better chance with cyber police in your country, they could request for information from services.
