Title: "I spent a day trying to pay for things with bitcoin and a bar of gold"
Post by: Mometaskers on October 26, 2017, 06:46:19 PM
OK, I don't know if it really meant that bitcoin is really becoming more widespread but it seems to get featured more and more often in channels I'm subscribed. This video here, while it didn't go into details about the cryptocurrency, did an amusing experiment.

What do you get out of this guys? Is it looking good for bitcoins or not?

To be honest, I'm socked. they did not accept gold?? The most world wide spread an know value of the world. I didn't think at this. Regarding bitcoin, if were over here, i would have painted your apartment for bitcoins, so bitcoin is efficient, it is a mirror of the future and, I'm glad that it is not so popular, i have some extra time to gather some more Bitcoin or altcoins, so yes, it looks very good for bitcoin and congratulation for the video.

IF someone handed you Chinese or Swiss currency and you hadn't seen it before would you accept it? One is worth considerably more than the other but you wouldn't know it.

Edit:
THIS IS INSANE. Who would risk having someone accept a 100g (over 3oz) gold bar for a to go food order? The video could be fake. They guy could take 4 months off his low pay job. At least try a 1/4oz gold coin, preferably something more recognized. People are going to think a big bar is a fake.

Technically a coin such as a 1/4 oz US gold coin has a legal value of $10, which is how much a bank would be required to give you for it. So the restaurant should accept it if they would normally accept cash, and would be legally required to accept it at its face value for the payment of a debt.

Gold is known to be something yellowish. It's easy to counterfeit. I would also refuse gold from random people. The only gold I trust is the one from legit store or bank and comes with certificate.
So yeah, don't be shocked they didn't accept gold.

An experienced gold dealer can recognize a fake gold coin of a recognized mint just like the employees at a bank know when currency doesn't feel right. But it probably is easier to counterfeit gold when giving it to someone who doesn't have the tools that a gold dealer has to check that it is real.

Gold scammers have actually gotten better. They coat the outer shell of the coin/bar with pure gold then fill the inner material of the coin/bar with some other cheap metal.

It can get really hard to tell unless you have certain instruments to help you identify that.

I think one reason was inconvenience. First they must prove that it is the real thing, and that would be hard even for large malls since even those don't have equipment for testing gold. And even if it's already proven that it's real, it's not like you'll get the entire bar's value. It's $4000 worth of gold, they would have to give change. If I was the fruit vendor and someone try to buy a watermelon with a $1000 bill, I'd probably be slightly pissed off, what more for larger bills.

No such problems with bitcoins.  :D

Well yeah that video goes to show that although bitcoin is tough to transact with it is an infinitely better option than gold. And this is how things are currently, give it 5 years and bitcoin may be accepted in nearly every store..

whereas the counterpart of gold will still be accepted virtually nowhere. I think I know where I am going to store my value heading into the future here.. ::)
