Title: How can we make life harder for scammers&hackers and safeguard future of crypto?
Post by: cryptokangaroo on October 27, 2017, 02:19:18 AM
How can we defend ourselves from losing our money to dubious ICOs run by scammers and not worry about our investments stored on exchanges, wallets, etc?
What needs to be developed technically-wise to let us have greater peace of mind and repel Hacker and Scammers Co? What should devs absolutely focus on?
To ensure serenity among investors and thus attracting more people into crypto.

No matter how secure a software or a program is, if the users are dumb enough to be trick by simple tricks then hackers can always breach their accounts or leverage it into hacking the site itself. As for ICO's why not do some research about that ICO's if they have product to market that will be valuabe and what unique features does it possess that other altcoin does not have and also transparency if the founder actually and devs actually exist, physically invested in in some business locally, detailed ICO, good feedback and hype from investor to their ICO's.

The best thing to do is to starve them out by spending time to research and not letting FOMO drive irrational behavior.  Looking at ETH going from pennies to over $300 in a blink of an eye drives a lot of that irrational behavior... but it's also part of the reason why we're here.  We have to realize that opportunities aren't lost in a matter of seconds, days, or even weeks... so take the time to research the devs, and the project.

All that said... to more explicitly answer your question.  Nothing.  Nothing is going to stop the scammers and hackers as they'll always find a way.  But it's not like this is unique to crypto.  Anyone remember the Nigerian Prince email scams?

You are right as long as people are stupid enough to be tricked by these scams it won't stop. The problem isn't in the security of your wallet it is that people keep falling for this.
The Nigerian prince is a great example , they  don't send these e-mails out for fun it actually works.

I think it's definitely going to come down to the community members doing their part and not falling into the schemes they prey among the uneducated and the ignorant. We need to stay resilient in our rules and be helpful to each other in order to keep this community healthy and to keep the scammers away.

Really, scammers thrive off of new people that really don't know what they're doing. Very rarely do I see veterans of this community fall into the traps, as they usually know how to fight them off. That's why I think it's so important for this community to be welcoming and friendly to new people, otherwise the growth is going to stagnate and we're going to have a rough time.

If people would (a) keep their coins in a hardware wallet or encrypted desktop wallet (not on an exchange), (b) stop falling for scams that ask for your private key, and (c) stop falling for scams that offer unreasonable returns.... It would be a good start.

So, I think the #1 priority to stop people from getting scammed should be educating people about what not to do.
