Title: choice of hot online wallets
Post by: bit9999 on October 27, 2017, 09:56:26 AM
With the hard fork approaching I saw bitcoin.org suggests to shun away from the hard fork adopters such as coinbase, blockchain and xapo? Any good online wallet to use?

Does anyone know those which online wallet those big exchanges such as bitstamp, kraken, bitffinex use? Do they use 3rd party hot wallet or they are using their own proprietary online wallet?

No, they are either:
1. Unsafe
2. Have zero guarantee of giving you access to your coins.

How hard is it to get a desktop wallet? Its the only way you can get full access of your coins.

It's impossible to tell. However, they are likely running their own wallet as the backend. Using a third party for the hot wallet would be way too hard.

Green Address (https://bitcoin.org/en/wallets/web/greenaddress/) is pretty appealing.  They have multisignature wallets in which the transactions need to be signed by both you and Green Address, so they don't control your coins on their own.

They also have nLocktime transactions so that your coins can be automatically sent to an address which you fully control at a certain date, in case Green Address becomes unable or unwilling to sign your transaction, and I also think they do 2-of-3 multisig wallets.

BitGo (https://www.bitgo.com/) has a similar system as well.

Online wallets are unsafe because the your private key will be shared by the wallet provider. If you are looking to safe wallet you please go with the desktop wallets such as bitcoincore, electrum and multibit wallet to have bitcoins safely.
Polenix and bitrex are exchanges widely used and localbitcoins is my favorite whenever I need to convert the bitcoin for any fiat cash.

In the case of Coinbase and Xapo, yes.

Blockchain.info, Green Address and BitGo are not in a position of enough power to steal your coins, provided that you use the features that they let you use.  I'm sure that there are some others as well.  In blockchain.info's case, you have access to your private keys.
bitcoincore, electrum and multibit
Multibit is no longer maintained and has had some serious bugs.  You should stop suggesting it.

It differs from exchange to exchange, but usually they will have most of their coins in cold storage, and they will take out what they need for a certain period into hot wallets that they control.  There should be an automatic system for the hot wallets to send out withdrawals when requested by their users.

Blockchain.info is not safe either. The "feature" to access your private keys is no guarantee you are the only one who has access to this key.
I would always recommend a desktop wallet. At least a mobile wallet.

This is also the best way to ensure you are getting your new coins after the fork. Just make sure to have a backup of your private keys and dont let someone spy on you.

iam using https://freebitco.in/ (https://freebitco.in/?r=892945) as online walled !
they have best fees for sending bitcoins and a small interest rate for holding bitcoins there !
and they offered on all forks to withdraw the fork or exchange .

kind regards

Keep your bitcoins in a wallet where you can control your own private keys. Something like electrum, armory, bitcoin core. That is the safest way to go about things. Blockchain.info has a sophisticated export procedure now and i wouldn't recommend them.

Never use a 3rd party when it's a hard fork coming up. You're putting too much trust in them for no reason.

Hopefully you have not deposited all your funds there as this is not at all recommended. Freebitcoin is just a faucet who thinks can be a wallet too. They can decide to shut down business anytime they feel like their business is not giving them the profit they were used too. In this case your bitcoins are gone down with them. Keep your bitcoins in Electrum, paper wallet, cold storage or a hardware wallet.

They can hack your account still.
If they so wished, they could change the code in their site and get your passwords and other information (such as gaining access to new secret keys generated with multisig or them to use to hack your account). Not saying it's likely, it's just something to consider.

It's not a good idea to store large amounts there long term. I doubt that company will be leaving any time soon though (I hope at least)...

Don't use a web wallet, period. Sure you can find some that actually allow you to hold your own private keys but usually, what you'll find is that either there is a difficulty in exporting the private keys when you need it since they don't support one fork or another or that they just don't give you access to it at all.

Use electrum, it's a small download and it's fast and safe.

Unless you can't download software for whatever reason, then use wallets on bitcoin.org that are listed as you being in full control.

Yap, electrum is your best choice, lightweight user friend and very fast. You can also adjust fees in case you need it. Well web wallets has its used though, but if you planning to hold big amounts then its not recommendable. And its really hard to trust them specially your private keys.

I have used them in the past but just for small amounts and for trading purposes only. I would immediately moved my coins to my electrum wallet so that I can have a good night sleep knowing that my coins is safe with me.
