I have never had a more difficult to read set of captcha images! I must have attempted to answer 8 times, and the "new image" link didn't help at all as it just shifted the image a few pixels to the right.

I understand the need to stop bots but a better captcha is definitely needed. One that is actually somewhat human readable would be nice.

Also the button for getting a new captcha didn't work for me either.

I had to keep reloading the registration page until a full captcha appeared.

It wasn't complaining, it was constructive criticism to help improve the site.  You know, to make it better for people that register in the future!

actually captcha's do not stop bots at all. in my personal experience, the only thing that works is logic questions such as:

If the sky is blue, does that make an orange green?

the answer would be no, and the bot is confused because there are two questions inside of one question.  another good example would be


"I apologize for the length of this question, but how secure is to secure? please type three spaces in the box followed by the very first word on this page. "


these are very easy to setup with SMF forum.

total bot signups with captchas: 11,968
total since removing captcha and adding logic questions: 0

I had trouble with the captchas on my PM system also.

Especially when people are willing to solve captcha's for a few micro coins at various earn free coins sites.
Yup, fools working for less than minimum wage so the bots have a library of solved captchas.

Minimum wages aren't the same everywhere, and not everyone can land a minimum wage job. (Economics 101: Minimum wages create a price floor, which leads to unemployment. Essentially, it's still better for a human to "waste time" making very little money solving capchas, than doing nothing at all.)

The logic question "capcha" seems like a good idea to me.

No matter how bad the spam is I have to agree captchas are fucking awful, I refuse to have them on my site anywhere.

the harder captcha to read, the better bot protection

Justify it to yourself however you want, but it is taking blatant advantage of them and is wrong.

I had issues with mine also I tried several time before it finally got one I could read...

It is, but only captcha doesn't stop them, SMF is using very old captcha and today's spamming software like xrumer are very advanced, they can bypass mail registration and recaptcha easily.

In my opinion theymos should use something like this  areyouahuman.com  (it's not currently available for SMF)

I think the game captcha is kinda nice. Just complete a simple game and pass instead of trying to read the messed up word. Not really sure how good is this against bot though.
