Title: How to power more than 8 gpus that requires 6+8pin connectors with 2 psu?
Post by: ntshb on October 28, 2017, 03:05:33 PM
I've always wonder how do people power their mining pcs that have more than 8-9 GPUs if they require 8+6 pins and each psu only has 4x 8pins and 4x 6+2pins with just 2 PSUs?

The PSUs need to power the risers (either using sata power or 4 pin molex) and any connectors on the motherboard itself.

There are lots of PSUs on the market. Including plenty of those with appropriate number of connecting cables.

There are some PSU's with more cables on it.
+ Some Gpu doesn't need full power connections, works fine on only 8pin power supply.

this

All my RX 570 and RX 580 work well with only 8 pin connected to them, and able to mine at 30 mhs / 720mhs Eth/DCR

or use add2psu or paperclip technique to add another psu. i would suggest to also look into server psu more cable, higher wattage and also cheaper

Better to use server PSU's for this matter. Each usually has 16x 6+2 pin cables. And would be best to get 6pin risers. Just my opinion and suggestion because this is what I use on mine.

I had two of these psus LEPA 1600W

Just connect it thru add2psu and you're fine with GPUs, for the rest you can use molex connectors.

I'm using just one PSU for 8GPU rigs. It's SuperFlower Leadex (1600W) for 8 GTX1070. It has 9 PCIe power connectors (5 with 8pin and 4 with 6+8pin connectors). It also has 2 CPU 8pin outputs, so you can use one of them via corresponding adapter (CPU to PCIe power)

Server PSU's with a breakout board are an option, but the larger capacity ones run off 240V and are too loud for a living space. I recently ordered one of these dual 120V 2400W PSU's for my ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ build and have been very happy with it.

http://www.panto-tech.com/products/206-110v-260v-power-supply-2400W-for-miner.html

It has 18 PCI-E 6+2 connectors that I use for the GPU VGA power inputs and I use an EVGA 1200 W PSU to run the motherboard and risers. The 2400 W PSU runs quiet and very cool as long as you don't run it at more than 50% of the capacity. When you run it at more than that, the fans get progressively louder the more wattage you pull from it. The other thing is it doesn't switch on and off automatically when using it with a add2PSU or dual PSU adapter cable like a standard ATX PSU, so you need to flip the power switch on the PSU to turn it on before hitting the power button and must turn it off manually as well. For the cost of $180 shipped via DHL direct from the manufacturer, I think it works well.

The same manufacturer also has the same PSU with only the 18 PCI-E connectors and it's about $30 less, so I think that may be a better option since I only use it for the VGA power inputs.

BBT did a review of the PSU and has run it through various tests in his recent live streams and it's held up well. We'll see how it holds up long term, but for $150 shipped it's a good deal and solves the problem of not having enough PCI-E connectors for larger builds.

Look at top lines of EVGA and Corsair.
