Title: CPU mining
Post by: prbitcoin on October 28, 2017, 04:38:04 PM
Hi! I was doing a workstation build with a i7-6850k and someone suggested me a ryzen threadripper, I'm assuming the 1900x as it's the closest to what I need.
That made me think about cpu mining. I know cpu mining doesn't mine enough for people to invest in, but since I'm going to buy a CPU anyway, I might as well make the best with what I got.

So, what does mining require from the CPU? Is it more cores? Is it more clock speeds? thanks!

Cores and threads would  be your priority.

Depends on the algo. For cryptonight, it's L3 cache that matters: each thread needs 2 MB of cache, so the hashrate will mostly depend on the L3 size rather than on the number of CPU cores. For other algos, cores/clocks might matter more.

Thanks for very useful info, wacko, I didn't know this before about cryptonote.
