Title: Open mining rig - What material should I place my motherboard on?
Post by: mackminer on June 27, 2011, 07:32:28 PM
Hi there,
Really unsure about this and can't find any info on google, hopefully someone can help me out.

I'm going to setup my mining rig this evening. What kind of material should I place my motherboard on -  will anything do as long as it is not metal? And wet!  :)

A piece of cardboard or wood will do. Or you can ziptie it to a milk crate.

Hello.

You should try acrylic glass.

cardboard +1
actually, you could just use the box from the motherboard, has some edges too in case something gets spilled or something
and ofc, perfect size :D

Put it on the anti static foil/bag on the motherboard box. ;)

I like the milk crate idea. It's cheap, effective, and easy to transport.

put it on a shovel so you'll have something to dig out of the money pit youre getting yourself into.

Its best if you have that sort of styro-foam (soft type) which normally comes with it when you buy the motherboard. just place it on top. Forget about the plastic, dont even think of putting it there because it will melt. Static bags are meant to be use when you are storing an electronic device...but not when its on.

I usually find that the box the motherboard came in works quite well.

I've also used a pinning board which is cheap, and works great because cork is a fire retardant.

+1 - I find my mining rig motherboards come with a lovely stand...no extra cost.

Put it on the anti static foil/bag on the motherboard box. ;)

Don't. That ESD bag is slightly conductive so it forms a sort of a crude Faraday cage to protect the motherboard while the motherboard is IN the bag. On the other hand, having the whole motherboard sit on top of a sheet of conductive material is just asking for trouble.

Stick the entire thing in your fridge. You're going to need to lower the fridge temp though.

Yea, don't do the static bag option, terrible idea. Wood works really well (its what we use over at [H] folding) but I would suggest STRONGLY that you put in those little risers and screws in, just as if you were putting it on a mobo tray. This will keep the board a just bit off the surface and allow for air flow, and motherboards were designed to go in trays, not all pieces on the bottom are the same size, so you'll get some un-even flex if you flat surface it. use the holes and risers, the mobo was designed to use those to avoid flexing, so let all those millions they spent on R&D go to good use lol

Motherboard box FTW.  Benched, Folded, Mined and dry iced more boards on boxes than I can count over the years  ;D
