Title: New mining rig frame, suggestions?
Post by: PontusLSE on October 30, 2017, 08:38:00 AM
Hi everyone, I´m a long time "lurker" and I´ve finally decided make an account and ask for some advice.

I currently have an 6*GTX1070 rig running and I am about to build more rigs now. The idea is to expand slowly and adding one  rig with 6 gpu each month.

I have made a design of a mining rig frame that I can build for about $50. I have designed it to be stack-able so I easily can expand my farm in the future.

I am a bit short on space so I have kept it as small as possible with about 95mm between the GPU's (center to center)

Is there any obvious flaws with this design? All comments appreciated.

Only the first picture link is working for me.

okay  board and psu is under the gpu's

and width has to be what it is.

if you stack  heat rises you may have

an issue.  maybe 20 inch box fans in a push pull are better  then the fans you show.

or maybe keep your fans  but put 20 inch box fans as pull.

only a single image works.

I fixed the links, sorry about that.

I also added an alternative vertical solution.

(can someone tell me how I make the images visible without having to click the link?)

I understand the want to have nice materials, but really, that just adds more cost and doesn't help your rigs at all.  I went to Home Depot (any store that sells lumber will do), and purchased some 1x1's and just nailed them together into a very similar looking frame as yours.  The 1x1's cost I believe it was something like 30 cents per 8 foot piece and it takes 2 to 3 pieces to make a stand with some nails.  Entire cost was a couple of bucks per frame, which is pretty much the cheapest you can get.

Just my 2 cents, otherwise your designs look good and should keep your cards cool through that wind tunnel effect.

I´m not really that comfortable to have this kind of equipment bolted directly to a wooden structure due to the risk for fire in case of a short circuit or failing hardware.

But that it perhaps unfounded concerns.  As you implies, keep it cheap and simple, I guess the main focus is to make money after all  :D

I went with the non-vertical design.

Its about 540mm x 400mm x 300mm (width, depth, height) and can hold 6 GPU's.

Design looks good. And external fans are absolutelly right solution for the rig. Do you plan to make walls of the case to organize airflow?

Hi,

You dont need such nice frames, it doesn't help you at all use that money to buy an extra fan or back up funds for your rig. A simple frame will do , do pm i can show u what kind of cheap frame i'm using.

Don't get me wrong, your frames are really nice looking at your price point is better than anything you can buy that is equivalent.  But if your concerned about a fire, you have other problems than what your rig is being made out of. Step 1 would be to make sure your rig is stable and your comfortable with all power related inputs.  If you can't be comfortable with your rig not catching fire, then you need to rethink your build.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

I understand that this frame might be a bit overkill, but I´ll stick to it for now.

I reduced the size of the initial design and the totalt cost to build is about $35 USD per fram so its not such a big deal. I have materials for about 8-10 frames in total and when they all are built and running I´ll reconsider the frames for future rigs.

I have another question for the experienced miners. Managing a few rigs (5-10) is no problem, but I guess the more rigs I have the more time it will take to managing them.  How are you guys doing it? What software to you prefer for the small farms (10+ rigs)?

The idea of low rise horizontal rig walled for better airflow is quite nice, I might try building something similar. Will add a row of pull fans for better airflow and maybe filters before push fans.
