Title: [WTS]- 2011 Casascius DEMO coin-
Post by: krogothmanhattan on October 31, 2017, 07:16:27 PM
Up for sale is a Demo Casascius 2011 coin. Please PM me with offers..Thanks

I am selling this on behalf of another person who is not a member on the forum.

Escrow paid for by buyer.

About the DEMO coin

These are the first experimental coins made by Casascius. They were used to test the holograms to reveal the honeycomb pattern left behind, without ever being funded.

The coins can be identified by looking up the public key on a peeled, seemingly ‘pre-funded’ coin. If no BTC has ever been in the address, then it is possibly a demo coin. Currently, demo coins are only known to exist in brass 1 BTC form.

Casascius sold these coins to prior buyers as extras. On a few occasions, buyers who ordered Casascius coins
had the option to also buy some ‘demo’ coins along with them.

While no numbers relating to these coins exist, it is no doubt that they are extremely rare compared to the mintages of normal Casascius coins. It has been suggested that these coins may be an effective way to invest in the collectable value of Casascius coins without exposure to BTC price fluctuations.

A coin just like this was recently listed for $8000 on Ebay...It recently sold for a best offer!

Cool, I think I saw one on eBay a while back and asked the guy why it wasn't funded but had been peeled, his answer was along those lines but not in so much detail, so now it makes much more sense... Not even sure those made the encyclopedia, sweet! :D

I received one of these with my very first order from Mike.  I've thought about selling it over the years but now consider it part of my permanent collection.  This is a big piece of history, imho.

I agree..They are a big piece of history for btc coins. I wonder how many were kept? Probably many were just discarded. That is why they are rare

Found that ebay listing:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Series-1-Casascius-2011-ERROR-1-BTC-USED-CASACIUS-RARE-BITCOIN/222652428722

Looks like someone bought it pretty recently.....   iirc there was a "Best Offer" button... wonder if they got the $950 they were asking for??

Does that seem like a lot for one of these?

How would you price one of these? ???

It looks like the seller was not even aware this was a Demo coin.

He mentions it was redeemed when in reality it was never loaded to begin with, like all Demo coins.

Not sure how to price these but they are rare as many were probably discarded since no digital value was ever loaded in them.

No, I know I didn't post on the thread, I might be wrong about the price, but I remember the OP asking for what I thought was some really really  ridiculous price and than like the 5th post down someone bought it.

Good to know regardless...they are a piece of history and are worth a lot. For the collector that wants to have all different varieties in the their collection, this will be needed too!

I am a newbie looking for some info on demo coins. The only information I have been able to find is on the website coinfirm.org and in the 'Encyclopedia of Physical Bitcoins and Crypto-Currencies'

I purchased one of these coins many years ago and would be interested in selling it, but I have no idea how much they are worth. Anyone interested in making a reasonable offer or giving me some idea of value?

I have pics for anyone interested. Unfortunately I cannot post them here

You can post the links and someone can repost the for you.
Or even post the 1st-bits or full address would help as well
Happy to take a look and give you a price range for it.
Seemingly enough, they are decently rare. :D

Thanks very much for your reply! The public key that I have is as follows: 1E562iYs
The coin is in excellent condition as far as I can tell with the exception of a slight wrinkle in the honeycomb pattern on the reverse.
