Title: mining pool on dedi server?
Post by: ZipReg on November 01, 2017, 07:32:38 PM
Greetings all, I wonder if setting up a full node pool on a dedicated server is still done today for mining bitcoin? And if anyone has experience with running their own pool, what kind of minimum memory and bandwidth resources are required? Thank you

You might get away with running a P2Pool node on a non-dedicated machine, but I doubt anything less then a dedicated server would handle a full pool reliably.
If someone like pooler that runs a large pool says differently, though, go with their experience.

Thank you, yes definitely talking about utilizing a dedicated server independently to run a full node pool for bitcoin miners to remotely connect to.

Is that a thing?

Regarding p2pool, I read the site and it seemed like it's almost what I'm looking for but I see no mention of remote miners connecting, so I'm not sure I understand that correctly? Thanks again for any assistance :)

P2Pool is designed to allow remote connections - no point in having a POOL if you can't do that.

It's just not a "big centralised" pool design, it's designed as a "distributed peer-to-peer pool" setup.

I think you should start with lighter currencies, because Bitcoin is very slow and "heavy". and best of all, buy a ready farm at once

Thank you, I understand your reasoning and it's true I should :) but I want to learn how to do it with bitcoin.

I should have mentioned I have been a server admin for some time, primarily LAMP distros, just never got into crypto.

So if someone out there is in the know but are reluctant to spend time posting because you think it may be wasted effort, I assure I am not a server admin noob, just crypto noob :) Thanks again for assistance in pointing me in the right direction to get started. Have a great day everyone!

What else could it possibly run on?

Precisely! Thank you, any suggestions on options other than p2pool? Cheers
