Alt Coins used to take a few weeks before they disappear.   The original alt-coins Namecoins and Devcoins are still in existence and so is one of the earlier CPU friendly coins Litecoin which is growing from strength to strength.  The rest takes weeks to disappear usually, but now it seems that it can take 24 hours from a Alt Coin launch to becoming "Turd" :( .  Might as well not launch and save a few bytes for Bitcointalk forums.
