Title: It's time for a Bitcoin sign in sign language
Post by: BitKoot on June 15, 2013, 02:32:23 PM
Yesterday my girlfriend was practicing here sign language. She asked me if there was a sign for Bitcoin. As far as I can tell, there is no sign yet. As part of worlwide adoption of Bictoin, let's decide on a sign for Bitcoin in sign language!

We have two candidates:

The first starts with the sign for the letter 'B', then two vertical bars are drawn. These two signs together resemble the Bitcoin logo.
Video 1 (http://youtu.be/WTxxzbHvm3c)

The second sign also starts with the letter 'B', then the sign for money is made.
Video 2 (http://youtu.be/Z-b_xwsn-mI)

What do you think should become the universal sign for Bitcoin?

Combination 'B' and 'live long and prosper'.

It has to be practical, easy to do since people will possibly using it throughout most of their day.

Think "Bit" and "Coin"

I almost like the sign that the Room service guy does for a Tip in Home Alone:

Or a way to use bitcoins if you are blind, maybe a talking wallet? That hopefully does not become self-aware/SKYNET

That actually is the sign language sign for money. But I saw that in the US it's different. Sign language has different dialects depending on the geographic location. But I think the sign you are referring to (and the one from video 2) is recognized around the world.

Or a way to use bitcoins if you are blind, maybe a talking wallet?

That would actually be great, also because that would probably mean that bitcoin adoption has become widespread (until then those kind of specific utilities will not become available/profitable).

I didn't see that your second video included that same sign for money. I like your two ideas, but they're kind of hard to do at first. Do you know what the sign for "Bit" is as in "Computer Bit"?

Middlefinger?

What about both middle and ring finger up with thumb over index and pinky finger? The two fingers up represent the two bars and the thumb, pinky and index fingers form the B. Sort of like flipping someone off with both the middle and ring finger.

How about combining the two signs for "money" and "electricity"?

Here's an American Sign Language dictionary (http://lifeprint.com/).

Nuances get tricky. :)

Ok here's what I propose:

http://s1.postimg.org/wztz905vj/bitcoinsigns.jpg

You can also do the hand sign forward and palm up in a firm manner to say "Give me my bitcoins"

If anyone wants to design some better diagrams that would be cool.

One thing to consider with these is that it has to be easy to make the sign. I found it took some time to get the proposed Bitcoin sign by BitcoinBarrel right. People should be able to use it in a conversation without a 3 seconds pause to get their hand in the right position :P.

The sign from the first video is made in the same manner as the euro sign is: http://www.handspeak.com/word/index.php?dict=en&signID=689
(it's the letter e with two horizontal bars drawn).

I wonder if it is possible to propose a new sign to be introduced. One problem is there are so many different organizations all over the world involved governing some local used sign language dialect. Although there is an international sign language dialect (International Sign).

This discussion reminds me of the 'Ichthys (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichthys#The_early_church)'; a sign used by Christians during the time they were persecuted by the romans to mark places they could meet or talk. Imagine if Bitcoin is ever outlawed, people would use a sign to start secret meetups and set up trading :D.

It might take a second to get the sign right the first few tries, but it's rather easy I think plus it looks cool.

This is a cool idea--can we have people who specifically use sign language for regular communication identify that in your posts?  I'm all for interest in the topic from outside the signing community, but the opinions of people who rely on sign language for actual communication are much more important than just what a general audience thinks is fun or neat.

Video 1 is the better of the two option, imho.  It's great you are thinking inclusively with regard to BTC, now we need a Braille symbol to!

Me neither. My ring finger automatically bends if I try to bend my pinky like that. The only way I can do that is if I force my pinky down with my thumb.

Then maybe you're not cut out for Bitcoins? Have you thought about Ripple?

Agreed. It would be great if we could get a native sign language speaker from the community to make a pick.

I'm guessing getting it accepted as a real sign by the standard organisations in different countries will be a bridge to far as long as Bitcoin is not mainstream.

We could gather all the submissions and have a poll then advertise it on various sign language websites.
