Wait for the improved Eruptor Blades coming out soon from Friedcat.  Late June or July, he said.

Donīt buy a rig for bitcoin mining, but you could mine litecoins with a good gaming rig (7950, 7970) since soon the difficulty of bitcoin mining will skyrocket and GPU mining wil be dead(in SHA-256 mining)
You could buy a BFL miner but the delivery will take forever, you could use https://www.cloudhashing.com/ , or go with a group buy of avalon chips and let someone assembly a klondike k-16 for you https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=200067.0;topicseen (european group buy)

You can get a couple used radeon 7970 graphic cards for $300 each and add 10 USB miners to the rig which cost about $220 each which will give you 5gh/s but you would probably be better off just buying and holding bitcoin with your money.

The best choice right now would be to wait and see.  Some of the open source designs based on Klondike's boards and Avalon's chips look promising; they're rolling out (hopefully) in a few months

When the BFL chips from this last batch all go online (although anybody's guess when that will be, they've delayed shipments so many times) the network difficulty will be so high that only ASICs will be profitable.

But look at mining this way: you have to leave it plugged in and running all day every day for it to make money. People are only going to do that (and pay for the electricity) when it's worth it to them.

Say a mining rig costs $X. if it can produce $X in bitcoins in only a few months, then EVERYONE is going to want to spend $X to get one. It's a no brainer. But if the difficulty is so high that it takes one or more years to produce $X worth of BTC, more people will drop off. And people that do have a rig might not run thiers all the time, since it''s not very profitable.

So if you think the initial gold rush is over (which I argue it is, since ASICs aren't a secret anymore), then with human greed expect that whatever you spend on a mining rig it will take 12-18 months to recoup your investment. After that the profitability will go down because of the increasing hash rate.

If it's less than 12 months for mining rigs to pay for themselves, more people will buy them. If it's more than 18 months, then less people will buy them.

Had this same question. Good post. I believe I will continue to be lazy and just buy with cash and see what happens.

OMGWTF why are people pointing him to BFL? Are you crazy?

Don't buy from butterfly labs!! They are known liars, and are up to 10 months late in delivery! They might never ship!

I can't believe you really pointed him there, trolling is one thing, trolling his money quite another...

Why would anyone purchase a rig and then not run it all the time, if it's even the least bit profitable??

So eloquent how you described that +1 - FWIW I diversified my approach to btc and cryptocurrency - I have 2 X6500 FPGAs mining BTC and sometimes FRC,  I bought 2 1 year shares of cloudhashing 3 5gh singles and a 50 gh single for starters.  I've seen varied gains from using the 6500s but they are at least light years past the single 5450 I had been using prior.

You can look at the Custom Hardware forum https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=76.0  or the Marketplace to take advantage of some of the GB and offers.
Make sure you do your research before investing in any of these offers.  Caveat Emptor

Cheers

Don't buy ASIC. Wait for prices to fall. Because you are not gonna have it paid foritself soon enough, if you buy it at current prices.

Buy gpu, if you have considerabely low electricity cost - around 10c/kwh or lower.

Anything you will do is basically a gamble. Maybe I am right, maybe the guy who adviced you to buy asic is right...

In any case, do not buy from BFL. There is a swedish company that promises to produce 350Ghash for around  5k$, shipping in september or october, and unlike BFL, they do not take preorders yet. If you want to
buy asic now, I think the best is to buy Avalon. You could also buy a mining shares.. Anything you do is a gamble, and the asic makers are the ones who will profit the most.
