Title: New to bitcoins :)
Post by: Johnny6 on June 15, 2013, 10:08:35 PM
Hey guys, Im new to bitcoins, and I have a few questions before I dig in:

Can I mine bitcoins with my gaming computer?
The gaming computer I have is this one:
http://www.dell.com/uk/p/alienware-aurora-r4/pd.aspx

Where is the best place to buy bitcoins?

Can I buy them with a bank account or cash in my local area? (I am from Scottland)

Of course you can mine with your gaming computer BUT..
it has a nvidia card which is very ineffient to mine but if you have free electrity if you dont, dont mine with 680.

you can buy btc:s form https://mtgox.com/ or https://btc-e.com/ . Use a bank account to buy it, it is quite difficult to buy them with cash

You can, but it might not be worth it.
Since specialised hardware (Asics) are on the market GPU mining is becoming more and more ineffecient.

I'm certain you can.
You could give localbitcoins.com a try to find someone in your area.
I don't know what's the best way to buy them in Scotland, but don't use Paypal or Ebay to buy/sell Bitcoins.

You are far better off at bitstamp.net or localbitcoins.com for fast P2P.

I had a really difficult time finding a place to buy bitcoins when I first started this (about a month ago). Went through a ton of sites trying to find one that would allow me to buy BTC with paypal or Credit Card. I was in Afghanistan at the time, so I didn't have access to Western Union/Moneygram to deposit money that way.

I finally went with www.coinbase.com. I linked it through my bank account and have made a couple of purchases so far. It takes a while though. 3-4 days to verify your account. And then about 5 days from the time you purchase until it is deposited in your wallet. Now that I'm back in the US is might try to find another faster way.

Localbitcoins.com is the place to be for local transactions. I personally have never traded locally, because of no one owning Bitcoins nearby. But, I'm almost certain there will be someone within 50 miles of you.

Welcome!

In the US I used moneygram. I did see someone mention not to use moneygram but as of yet haven't figured out why not. Worked well for me.

Nowadays, the bitcoin world is pretty saturated, you can quit the game if you are not willing to spend a lot of time catching up with others :)
