Title: Best practices in placing the PSU

Hi,

I tried to search about this here but couldn't find.

I have HX1200i and H81. Will mount the GPUs on top.

Please let me know what should be ideal location of the PSU? Should PSU's fan upside or downside. Any best practices in placing the PSU?

Your rig is rack mount case or open air frame?

Normally I put PSU in place which is easy for connecting cables to all GPUs and risers.
Another note is PSU's fan side should direct to outer of rig because in some case if the loading is high, the hot air from PSU should not flow to MB or GPUs.

Can I rotate the PSU and have fan on sideways (originally HX1200i's fan is on top)?

How about placing the PSU sideways out? Meaning fan is throwing air out in the open space (refer image):

That's what I do, stand the PSU sideways so the air intake and exhaust are blowing outwards. It also give the bottom of the PSU a way to dissipate heat. That case seems too short though. It looks like it doesn't leave much room for the USB riser cables and for a GPU over the PSU. 11 inches tall is a good height.

Thanks. The height of frame is 11 inches but the horizontal plank is places 4 inches down from the top. Yes I also think I need to move the plank 3 inches up.

The dimensions of the frame is 26.5 x 16.5 x 11.

One question: Is placing the PSU sideways does any harm to PSU in the longer run (though the original position of the PSU fan is upside)?

As long as you're not blocking the airflow in or out and there is room for the PSU to dissipate heat, I wouldn't worry about it. The fan is the only moving part and it's made to hang upside down. The GPU fans should wear out before anything else. I use a box fan to keep good air circulation and remove heat around the cards. That makes the card fans work more efficiently, so you don't have to turn them up high and prolongs the life of the fans.

The top of horizontal GPU support should be exactly 4.5" from the top of the bar where the GPU's screw in. I like to use a 1" x 1" board so that it doesn't block the air flow and I have room to get in underneath. Home Depot sells it by the foot and you can cut it to length.
