Title: [CLOSED] 0.1 BTC for a quick logo
Post by: byter on June 18, 2013, 12:38:45 PM
Hi all,

I am doing websites for clients (code implementation) and I am starting to create my portfolio.

I will offer 0.1 BTC to the one that will make me a logo, nothing really fancy...

The name of the site is WebManiak

Please post your logos (be sure to watermark them, I don't want to be called a thief).

The selected person will then be rewarded a small 0.1 BTC, and send me the PSD once I paid.

CONTEST CLOSED, AS SOME ARTISTS FROM THIS FORUM ARE SAYING THAT I'M MAKING THEM LOOSE THEIR TIME

It's not so bad for something like this, where you know they have what you're buying, and they have nothing to gain except bad ratings by not sending it, but in most cases, saying you'll pay first will attract a good number of scammers.

0.025 BTC as it is
0.015 BTC to tweak it

Yep, but be sure to watermark it so that you're sure that nobody steals it!

What I was saying with that link is, don't do "show me designs and I'll pay if I like them" crap. Respect designers by finding one you like, paying him for his work, and receiving a high quality product. Anything else creates a marketplace of broke-ass designers constantly scrapping to make a dime and almost always just wasting their time.

Well, i totally understand you... But I don't need a 1000$ logo, i just need a simple logo. This is not a company meant to grow, I just want to create a portfolio to get a few clients as a side job... So I don't see why I would need to pay a lot for that!

Who said anything about "paying a lot"? Does respect for the trade only apply when more money is involved?

Try to understand it this way: 5 people start working on a design at the same time, and a 6th person presents a design you like and you choose it and pay them. Now 5 people have wasted their time because of you.

I suggest using the thread to find the person, check their previous work, choose them by making a commitment, then having them make something. If they fail to please you, move to the next.

Even if you're just paying 10$, you're asking artists to work for free at your leisure, who will receive payment only if you like the work they produce, not for the fact that they actually worked.  This doesn't make sense; people need to be paid for the time they put down, not for your personal opinion.  It would be better to find an artist you like, ask them if they'll work for you, pay them for their time, and be done with it.  This isn't a 'contest', as much as a way to employ several artists for the cost of one.

Guys, you make me feel almost as a victim now  with all your nospec talk.

Although it would be nice to hear at least something adressed at my sketch from OP
Even if it's "sod off!"

I understand your point of view... And in some way it is not fair. However, the company I am working in is regularly using "contests" for new designs. It's an approach that can be interesting I think, but that is my point of view!

However, if any artist doesn't feel like working for nothing, he can also show me his portfolio and if I like it I will be happy to choose him!

Good man. Everyone, submit your portfolio to him and let that speak for you.

I don't think you're listening.

Matthew, just because I don't do things the way you want them to be done doesn't mean I don't have the right! I'm not forcing anyone to work for me, right?

There are hundreds of contests out on the web and it is at the moment a very popular way of getting graphic material, I'm not inventing anything...

Haha, thanks, It's nice to hear it from an artist :)

I had to pull out my wacom from a closet for this one.
Although I did not use it, lol.

Say, Mike, how much would you charge for some low detail pixel-art if you are ever approached on such matter?

Depends on the project; if it's just a one-time image, I'd probably charge about 20$, especially if it was an itty bitty one.  However, pixel art can get really complex and take hours upon hours to complete; depending on exactly what the client is asking for, and how long it would take, the price would definitely vary, and of course, it depends on your skill.  If you're not an established pixel artist with several examples to show your ability, you might not want to charge quite so much.  I've only dabbled with pixel art myself so I have little clue how much work it takes to produce good results, but from what I've attempted, it's nothing trivial.  Anyway, a good rule of thumb is, if it's going to take a long time to finish, and you're competent in your ability, charge accordingly.  If it's something you'll finish in an hour, charge accordingly.  Just don't sell yourself short and charge 10$ for work that'll take days to complete, you know?  It really doesn't attract clients like you'd think it would :P

Anyhow, here's my entry for this contest:

OK, let's make things easier and close the contest - I'll spend some money in a specialized contest website and avoid trolling from "artists"

I must say, though, that imho 30% of Services board are contests.

Some other contest site with "professionals", apparently.
