you have to make Ethereum wallet first . i use my MyEtherWallet.com.
when you join airdrop you will give your ether address to dev. and they will send coins/tokens.

Airdrops in my opinion is a strategy novel crypto projects do to gain publicity at inception. It's when they distribute a certain percentage of their coins to the participants. But the caveat is you have to do a few things in order to receive them. Usually this involves, following the project on Twitter, Telegram, Slack, Medium, Bitcointalk. In certain cases you might need to have a certain number of followers on Twitter, friends on facebook and posts on Bitcointalk etc. You also need to have a wallet compatible with the coins the project is offering.
A considerable percentage of airdrops are scams though(or end up being futile attempts), but unless you don't expose your private information like keys or passwords, you would lose nothing except for the time you spend on filling the google form, and tweeting or following them on various groups.
Can they pay off?. Yes they can, in cases where the coin starts circulating and trading on trading platforms. A friend of mine is doing airdrops exclusively and he has made over 100 dollars worth of coins in a month. His payout might not be that great, but hey its free money.

Go to altcoin announcement thread in bitcointalk you will find lots of airdrop fill the google docs or in their website give your ether or waves or their own wallet address . Once they start distribution statred you will receive coin. May be some small task required to do for receiving coin following in social media , joining telegram or slack kind of.

I was not convince with your saying about airdrop is an event because that is a not an event.
