Title: Dust covers on miners?
Post by: hotwired007 on November 09, 2017, 01:02:13 PM
I have a few Antminers with 120mm fan intakes - has anyone added 120mm dust covers to them?

Any pro/con (apart from obvuisly less dust going into them)?

I've never used them, what type are you considering?
The Con I can think of off hand is you will be restricting the airflow. Not sure but as long as your ambient temperature is cool enough you might be okay.

You could do the old pantyhose trick on the front fan.  That's going way Old-School computer geek stuff.  8)

i found a pack online of 120mm dust shields - just cheap and nasty lol...

my miners sit in my hallway and heat my house but after a while fill up with dust so i turn them off and blow through with air

Filters aren’t super expensive, you can try buying just one pair of them and testing them on one miner for a day to see if airflow isn’t restricted and temps are still good. Actual testing is the best way and fortunately these covers are pretty cheap.

Filters will most likely reduce airflow and heat up the miner. If they are in your house, try keeping the house clean and you wont have enough dust build up to worry about it.

ouch... I'll tell that to the wife.

In all seriousness though - they're in a fairly high traffic route (hallway) so they don't get filthy. its maybe every couple of months i de_dust them, i just figured having a filter would help - when they arrive i'll do some monitoring for a week and see if they have any negative effects.

Well, if you have a wife that allows antminers in the living space, I'm sure she will react just fine :)

Flat fan filters - not recommended, especially if you have any kind of pets. You want the filter to be much bigger than the fan inlet if you can do it - box filter, etc.

Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

I tried that on my S5 units. ONCE.

The temp of the miner went up a LOT due to the flow restriction the filters put on the fans.

the filters arrived this morning, i will check temps today then clean one and fit a filter on the intake fan and see what happens - its only an S3 so shouldnt heat up too much more
