Title: [SOLVED] Re: second graphics card suddenly utterly slow (HD6870)
Post by: Smuus on June 28, 2011, 06:47:47 PM
Hi,

I build a mining rig with two HD6870 graphics cards, which ran with 260MHashs/s each until yesterday. Since then the second one only runs at about 500kHashs/s which is unacceptable. I tried diffrent things like disabling crossfire (which it was at first, but then magically activated itself... well it certainly didn't but I don't know how it did), changing ubuntu themes and other useless stuff.

I am running ubuntu 11.04, installed it with the tutorial of Raulo (http://forum.bitcoin.org/?topic=3359.msg47174#msg47174 and http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=3359.msg160590#msg160590). Installed Catalyst driver version is 11.4 although I tried 11.6 but it didn't work. Oh and I am using poclbm as miner with -v -w128 if this is anything worth as information...

Yesterday I also had problems with freezing system when switching off the monitor. The problem is gone, but might be related.

Anybody has a clue? Might the graphics card be broken (it is not two weeks old)?

Sincerely,
Smuus

What sort of temps were you getting on the cards?

I'd first want to troubleshoot that card to rule out anything being physically wrong with it. Take out both cards and place the trouble card in the primary slot and fire up your miner. (make sure to check that the vid cards fan is spinning, etc before you fire up the miner on it!)  If you are not already I would snag a temp/fan speed monitor tool to check on things as well. Also, I've noticed on mine that if the driver dies silently that the hash rate will die until the driver is reloaded, which involves stopping the mining, reseting any OC you have going on and reloading the driver.  There are of course more things that can be checked on, but I'd start with ensuring the card and its slot is still functioning properly.

Hi, thanks for your suggestions. I optimized cable management inside the rig ;) but it turned out that the driver was not properly initialised. Probably with the last attempt to update the driver, I forgot to:
sudo aticonfig --initial -f --adapter=all
having done this and rebooted, I had my two cards again. The very poor mining rate was actually my CPU :D
