Title: Which is the best PSU for mining?
Post by: elissa on November 11, 2017, 09:49:50 AM
Is Segotep gp1350, 80+ gold, 1250W, a good PSU for mining? If not, which is better?

Is Segotep gp1350, 80+ gold, 1250W, a good PSU for mining? If not, which is better?

The one that works is best,

Figure 80% utilization, keep them cooled, good air-flow

I find it better to BUY Two 750 CM's than to buy one 1500 CM, 2 750's are $100 each, the 1500 is like $400, each 750 can support a 3-1070's no problem, u can buy  a cable for $1 that ties the two pwr-supply's together so they sync,

The only place I can see using a 1500 watt ( 1250w ) power supply is to power a BITMAIN antminer machine that requires special cableing

Pain in the ass to find 1500W gold supplys, easy to find 750CM (modular that 2-3 sets of 8pin gpu power)

More important that quality is running the thing below 75% utilization

More important is running your gpu's at 110 Watts, and NOT running them at 150watts, which kills everything,

Biggest problem in mining is most of the jackasses don't have a clue about hardware

Next to power is having plenty of external fans to blow clean cool air in, and over, and sideways

If your running a 1070-6 rig with two 750cm, that 3 gpus per supply at 330w, maybe mobo pulling 80 watts, your probably running at 60% utilization plenty of margin, these days even cheap ass chinese clone power supply have all the protection built-in

I like the 750CM supply's because they contain 4 8pin connectors, so you can run a BTC-12 MOBO and with 3 supply's and run 12 1070 cards off one rig, other wise a 2,000 watt supply would be +$1,000 USD

Another reason to run LINUX, windows only support 6/(8) cards, linux u can do as u wish.

I saw some posts where people say that windows had an update and now supports 10+ graphics cards.

Buy name brand, well reviewed power supplies.  Bitfools recommendation to use 2 X 750 over 1 1500 is spot on.  No need to throw away that extra money and they will be easier to replace if they fail.  At that price you could buy a third 750 and keep it as a backup in case one of the others fail.  This way you would have minimal downtime.

Also, every time I talk about power supplies I have to throw in a blurb about power supply testers.  If you have a mining rig you need a tester.  They are cheap, like $10-$15 and will save you so much time if you ever need to troubleshoot your rig.

Thanks!
I have a very good offer specifically for the brand I have mentioned and I thought there is someone who tested it and can tell me that it is a good PSU or not.

I you want to have the great review site for PSU go to http://www.jonnyguru.com he has a breakdown of performance, functionality, value and the build quality of the PSU just a remainder that most of the prices of the PSU might have gone down or it is already phased out so go check at least to amazon and newegg about the prices of a certain PSU.

I bought https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=210-GQ-1000-V1 yesterday. Just finished installing it. Very happy with my choice.

The best PSU with be a SERVER PSU that perfectly fits your GPU power consumption. What you need to do is compute how much power your mining rig consumes and get a PSU that has an 80% capacity of your consumption. 80% is the magic number because that is when your power supply efficiency will be maxed about. Better power efficiency = increased profitability.

Many recommends colorful platinum 1250W.

If you like ATX PSUs I would recomend SuperFlower Leadex PSUs. They have really great connection cables and count of the cables of single PSU (from 1200W) is enough for connection up to 8GPUs

And if you can't find those specifically, the EVGA G2 used that SAME platform - and showed up at up to 1600 watt rating.

Why do people say 80% is the magic number?  According to most of the data I've seen, peak efficiency is at around 25-35 percent capacity, although the dropoff is pretty minimal up to 80% for 230V circuits:
