Title: Online wallet services safest from hackers AND government confiscation
Post by: HeliKopterBen on June 21, 2013, 01:31:30 AM
In light of recent events, government confiscation of assets may be just as big a concern as hackers stealing coins.  Any ideas on what the best online wallet service may be to protect coins that are not in cold storage?  Preferably one that does not deal in fiat because governments will likely target services/exchanges that deal in fiat.  And no mixing services - they may be targeted too.  I currently use blockchain.info

Blockchain.info is 100% safe. They provide options to easily export private keys, so if you fear that website can be shutdown, you can make an offline backup of the wallet.

Not 100%.

If you used the API, Blockchain.info has had access to your private key already. They *could* have stored it server side without your knowledge.

Your browser by default accepts any JS it gets fed. They *could* have made you send your private keys to the server at any instance of when you used Blockchain.info without your knowledge.

Now, I am not saying blockchain.info does that. I have a lot of trust for piuk, but saying it 100% safe is not true.

You currently have made a good choice. I don't know of any other online wallet service that is more trustworthy or more secure.

it looks like blockchain.info does not use https?  meaning logins are sent in cleartext and easily sniffed/captured, or am I missing something?
(i'm using 2factor auth so i dont think it matters as much)

I like Coinbase too.  Coin stored with them, however, are not safe from government confiscation.  Why not?  Because they control and manage the private keys.  All it takes is one court order or police raid and you will be locked out.  You should really only use them to store a small amount of money, just as you would in a real leather wallet.  Don't use them as a bank account.
