Post by: Capitalism Prevails on June 21, 2013, 04:35:49 AM
Would smart phone apps be able to mine information about my wallet just like the mine information about everything else on my phone?

I wont try, smartphones aren't the safest devices.  The next wave of hackers attacks will be on smart phones

It would need to be encrypted, something like the private key stored in 1password would be fine.

I would say it's like having it on your Pc with internet. An encrypted backup would probably be safe, paperwallet or cold wallet would be better for large sums though.

You could also change the name of the file after encryption in order to further disguise it.
It should never be named wallet.dat.pgp or the likes. Try changing wallet.dat.pgp to tankless_water_heater_manual.pdf

Nobody wants a water heater manual.   8)

Not on your daily used Phone, but as kind of Hardwarewallet with No non Market Apps, and only conected to the Internet for Updates,
i don't see a big Problem in this, when you make after every usage a Backup

Smartphones aren't built for such shenanigans unless you dedicate it solely for the wallet.

You can also zip it with password.

You can also zip it with password.
That can be usually bruteforced.

Just put it on a cheap, difficult to lose laptop, that's what I'd do, anything smaller would be too easy for people to run off with or disappear.

If you use a weak password yes it can be bruteforced, same problem is with encrypted wallets too.

personally, I'd use an offline wallet for >100BTC.

Never gonna happen, for me at least ;)

Same here. Unless you have immense amounts of bitcoin, you don't have to worry about top notch protection.

Yep, don't always rely on them, take backups in memory cards or just simply wrote down your private key somewhere in a safe place.

Put it on a USB that is encrypted and inside a ZIP / RAR folder with a very strong password. Try not to loose the USB.

Or use a paper wallet.
