Title: Avalon 741 Overclock possible?
Post by: DinosaurBit on November 14, 2017, 03:26:25 PM
Hi there,

So a friend told me his friend (I know this makes a lot of friends) was able to overclock an Avalon 741 to 10 Th/s.

Is that possible at all? Been looking around for a procedure to achieve this but couldn't find anything...

I don't have enough knowledge regarding this specific ASIC to tell if it's the truth or not, so I'd like to have your opinion on this.

Thanks!

Set the voltage offset to +1 in the miner settings.

However, this will increase the power draw and decrease the reliability of the unit so make sure you have adequate power (ie: greater than 1200watts) and cooling.

Thanks for your follow-up!

PSU can take up to 1600W, so shouldn't be an issue.

What would you recommend for cooling?

I don't overclock my avalons, so I'm not sure how hot it gets when running at this offset - but I'd want to keep the ambient temp as low as possible and make sure the machine is running as cool as it can be.

No overclock will make them run at 10th reliably. Someone is full of crap.

Also with the Avalon being the least efficient 16/14nm miner, overclocking it and taking it even further out of its efficiency range is a terrible idea.

All I'm willing to say is that each 741s aren't created equal. Some of them will run at amazing speeds while others are just a little bit better than toasters. What Canaan does garuntee is 7.3th @ 0 offset. (which is pretty damn easy to achieve).

I do I have some avalons running at 9.5th@ +1 offset. But the power draw makes it less efficient than running at -2 and getting 7.5

I agree.

We get a nice range between 7.9 and 8.1 from our (8) 741's at '0', and about 8.1 to 8.4 at '+1'.

Temps run 28-31 and 86-91 at '+1'. This is with 50 degree ambient air coming in.

Amperage draw per bank of (4) units is around 24amps (208v) at '0' and 27-28amps (208v) at '+1' so they do loose a margin of efficiency when they are overclocked. Almost certainly overclocking shortens the MTBF life of the units, but I could not say how much. Not really worth doing IMO.
