Title: Does it make sense to invest a bit of money on all altcoins?
Post by: twodimensionalme on November 15, 2017, 10:54:30 AM
Hi there.

I'm not an expert, but I thought one day at least one of the altcoins will follow the skyrocketing trend of Bitcoin.
Considering this could happen, does it actually make sense investing a relatively small amount (say $20) on all the major altcoins?
Obviously this would be a long term investment.

Last week I invested $20 on each of the following:

IOTA
Ripple
Dash
NEO
Monero
OmiseGo

Now I'm considering:

ZCASH
EOS
Eidoo
Qtum

I wanted Lisk, but Bitfinex don't support it.

What do you honestly think of my simplistic approach?

Suppose it can't hurt, most of them will probably go higher than where they are now but I'm not sure how profitable it is though.

I personally couldn't decide aswell and started picking 5 coins I'd hold for longterm and some short term investments when the opportunity is right.

Longerterm (1-3 possibly more years)

Waves
ADA
BlockNet
VertCoin
IOTA

And I just keep adding up to those when the price goes low. Just think a bit about what possibilites you have, plenty of strategies you can try.

The meaning of investing in altcoyins is definitely there, but not all, because many of them even with the passage of time will not be worth anything, but it's wise to choose a portfolio for a long time, a good idea

I follow this strategy too. I guess if you are investing in the first 20 or 30 coins on coinmarketcap a small amount, there is a good chance that you will profit from several of them in the mid/ longterm. Its much riskier to spread your portfolio over small cap coins though. Also dont do it without research, if you arent convinced by the coin, dont invest. But as it seems, you already did some research, from what I see there: all coins are good ones to invest in in my opinion!

Eidoo should become a  good choice for you to put your order around $2, and zcash seems to be another good porfolio for you too. But i think i'm not interested in eos.
Qtum already developed its platforma and it's a bit interesting. you can try to remove eos.

In summer I decided to choose some altcoins and invest money. The price of Bitcoin was going up 3300 $ and down 1900$. Unfortunately, it was more perspective to invest in Bitcoin. So I recommend to think about Bitcoin and ETH price in the nearest future.

I don't recommend you invest in all Altcoins, but choose a maximum of 10 that you know are more reliable and less volatile. Look at top 10 on coinmarketcap for starters!

I agree with you here. That's what I did, it wont hurt much when you invest in the strongest altcoins with small amount like you said long term investment. Invest a lil amount of money, then forget it and check back after years.

There is lots of high potential coins more potential than you mentioned centra , waves , power ledger there is lots of coins having good business solution and still under estimated fresh and new .you can research some more new potential coins . Even mentioned coins are good but lots already behind that .

I believe there is no small amounts in investing. I mean, as you said you'll hold it for a long period, it can surely give you profits proportional to your amount invested. Good choice of coin, they are the most popular altcoins now, you know how popularity could affect the price.
Good thing you have invested your money in different coins. If some give you losses, the other coins will give you profits.

The list of options you have there shows you have done some home work on your own because that list to a large extent to me is something you are sure to get returns but the concern is how much do you expect a 20$ investment to yield at this time. But if that is what you can afford, why not just don't go after the coins that you expect your 20$ to turn into 100$ in five days. If that is the coin you are looking for, then losing the entire amount is also closer than you think. My advise, is to further streamline the lists to those coins that have proved to be more worthwhile than others and don't be carried away about holding for long.

Thanks for replying, you all.

Yes, I did some research and I put about $20 on those who convinced me the most.
I started with them, and I'll keep investing some more in other currencies I believe in.
However, honestly, I'll invest in coins I don't believe in, too, because "who knows".
At the end I would put, let's say, a total of $200-250 in the game.

Worst case scenario I wasted $250, but if I'm lucky I could see some interesting profit.

It's definitely not too bad to invest to some altcoins but all? Like thousands of them, sure maybe when you have abundant resources. In my opinion, when you have less than $200 don't diversify, just yet. Pick one or two projects and then when you have enough then diversify.

Well that would be a very long term investment. And sometimes most altcoins depend on how bitcoin would increase or decrease. I suppose a little experiment would do, but as you go on you would learn how to read announcement and track how the devs of each altcoin are moving about their own coin.

I agreed with your strategy to invest in altcoins and hold till the price skyrocketed. However, I don’t think it is a good idea to invest in all altcoins. I suggest you to research and pick 30 altcoins and apply this strategy.

Thanks.

I forgot to mention the main part of my portfolio:
- about $5000 worth of Bitcoins (bought this Sunday at about $5,800: pure luck, considering the current trend).
- about $500 worth of Ethereum.
- about $60 worth of Litecoins.
- about $20-$25 of the following:
    - IOTA
    - Ripple
    - Dash
    - NEO
    - Monero
    - OmiseGo

I will invest in a few more currencies in the next few days and wait what happen in the long term.
I'm inclined to get some more Bitcoins and Ethereum and put a bit more (but not too much) on altcoins in the next days.

If you have any suggestion, let me know.  ;D I've been sleeping for years and got in the game only recently.  :-\

PS: sorry for my English

That is a good plan for the future and I go with all the altcoins you picked. It's good to start small. You might be lucky to have a coin that you invested in now that will yield an unimaginable dividend in some years to come. I don't belief you will waste your fund. One or two coins will definitely cover your capital when you come to sell.

Only you can find the right strategy (for you). Investing in 5 altcoins or more may be a smart move, though in my opinion it's probably harder to manage in the longer run.

I'm personally a fan of "putting all my eggs in the same basket". Then watch that basket.

In the end it also depends how much you invest. Spending less on various projects (which seems to be your strategy), or more on less?

Using your example, I'd rather spend $120 on one project I really believe in, than $20 on 6 different altcoins or more.

Sure, the risk is higher with the first option. But the dividends can be a lot more important too if the value of the currency explodes.

Once you've found a strategy that works, you can then duplicate and take even higher risk (with more potential gain).

Good luck! ;-)

Michael

Oh, yes, when I wrote "all" altcoins I actually meant like 10, 20, max 30 of them.
However, let's assume we actually invest $10 in all coins available now (about 200?). I still believe there's room for profit in the long run, IF one of those will go up dramatically... who knows.

Your strategy is doable and the coins you have picked so far look good. When you say you will be holding the coins for long term, how many years are you intending to hold the coins?

Not on all. At least on those you have done some minimum of research.

Yes you can invest in all of them as you are only investing $20 in each of them you might not loss much and you are diversifying your investment so your chance of lossing will be really small even if one of the coin will get correction. When bitcoin is pumping hard like right now, all alts will get bloodbath which is best time to buy some of the alts.

Ideally 2-3 years, but it depends on how the market changes in the next months. Let's see.

Anyway, I want to thank all of you for you kind replies. I don't know anyone else except my wife ( :D ) to talk about cryptocurrencies, so it's great to be here.

Put together a diversified portfolio containing the top however many coins on coinmarketcap and invest part of your funds.  Pretty safe, especially if filtering for volatility.

But also try to find coins with promising technology and solid development but are undervalued and invest part of your funds in this.  Buy low and sell high.
