Title: Mining at half speed
Post by: AnCapFree on June 23, 2013, 12:23:14 AM
I was mining at 180Mh/s on Bitminter with my XFX 6770 (at around the mark the mining hardware comparison chart says the board should do) and never set any intensity (cgminer would indicate 4 but I would never try to alter it because if I did the computer would start to freeze and the hashrate would actually go down a lot). Now all of a sudden I'm getting 90Mh/s without setting intensity. Cgminer is now showing I: 3 and when I try to set intensity the results are invariably even worse.
I used to run at 85C constantly but now my board won't even go to 60C which I guess is good indication it's not living up to its full potential. What seems to be the matter?

Try copying a fresh install of bitminter over.. Sometimes settings get written that bugger the miners up..

Also. 85C is a bit hot for normal running temps.. The life of that card will be seriously shortened. :/

I'm not using the Bitminter GUI, I'm using cgminer. I'm just using Bitminter as a pool.
Thanks for the tip about the temperature. What do you recommend and how do I lower it? I'm not overclocking the board or even setting intensity and I'm actually having a fan blowing over it 24/7.

Ah sorry! misread that post something fierce..

Hmm whats your ambient room temperature? A fan doesn't really do much if its super hot in the room. :/

I'd say my room is at most 25C or else I wouldn't stand staying in here. I also keep the ceiling fan on all the time so it's not like my room is an oven. What is your suggestion for the temperature I should set my GPU and how should I do it? It is in out the box state right now.

72C° is my optimal temperature. What Memory Clock are you using?

I actually came down here to report on this. I just discovered that memory clock has no effect whatsoever on mining so I lowered my memory to the minimum that Afterburner allows, which is 330MHz and now it's running at 75C. Well, actually now that I'm using Afterburner I don't know what to believe. Afterburner says my GPU is at 85C, so I don't know. I guess I'm still running hot, any light on this?

Sounds to me that:

You are using this computer at same time as mining .
Cgminer is setting to  dynamic (Default) only uses one thread.

Try this...set cgminer to an intensity of 2 . It will then use 2 threads @ an intensity of 2. Now ramp up the intensity till your temp and or responsivness is what you want.. I can use a computer at intensity 7 and the temp will l remain at a reasonable level. (9 gets a bit sluggish).

Open your cgminer.config have a look around. Read the readme (its actually written very well ).

Set Cgminer to "Auto Fan" "Auto Gpu " With a temp of say 70 c. (this is what I use).

Set it and Forget it.

I have a laptop, so if I just stop using the computer cgminer will detect available performance to spare and ramp up even higher?

I don't have a cgminer.conf . I only have an example.conf

If I ramp up intensity, wouldn't that make my temperature problem even worse?

Are you using the "automatic fan speed" mode? You should make it custom. For example 75C° - 75% fans

This is my whole .bat

cgminer -o http://mint.bitminter.com:8332 -u username -p pass

cgminer -o http://mint.bitminter.com:8332 -u username -p pass

In Afterburner go to - Settings/Fan/Enable user defined

--temp-target 78 --gpu-fan 33-100. Still managed to bump up my core clock by 50MHz :)

This is the new issue I have now that I started to know a little bit more about how to work with the cgminer flags:

Thanks a lot!

Actually not solved. The issue comes and goes. If I stop cgminer then run it again and it ends up being messed up I end up having to reboot then launching the .bat and it keeps running cgminer at random intensities (although I didn't set one) and it won't come out right until it starts at intensity 4. Weird!
