It is not easy to compare one on one these coins but Bitcoin is in no way superior technically speaking (and some times it can easily be considered worse!).

Technically speaking most innovations happen in altcoins since it is both:

easier -- they don't have to support compatibility with the large infrastructure that Bitcoin has nor convince so many people for a change
and safer -- not so much money at stake
Having said that, the altcoin experimentation have greatest risks, could lead to new unexpected attacks and so on. Bitcoin learns from altcoins and can implement some of the features (some cannot without overhauling the system) in the future if they prove successful without risking much.

The main credit of bitcoin is that, it was the pioneer in decentralized revolution. So people first came to know about bitcoin and then they came to know about the altcoins. That's the main thing that made bitcoin different from any other currency. Today we have more advanced and technologically superior currencies in the market than bitcoin, but that couldn't bring down the acceptability of bitcoin in any way. People started with bitcoin and then diversified in to other currencies. Nothing else makes bitcoin different than altcoins.

Bitcoin has the first mover advantage, and is the face of cryptocurrencies as a whole, so up until now, the success of cryptocurrencies was heavily reliant on the performance of bitcoin. This year, we may see altcoins breaking away, because calling coins like eth and ltc alts is starting to be disrespectful. It may take a long time for alts to reach bitcoin's price point, but I think some will eventually get there.

In my humble opinion, Bitcoin is the most recognizable cryptocurrency that's why it is getting more and more popular. Many websites talk about it. Furthermore, Bitcoin is the most valuable cryptocurrency and it is a pioneer among all. I'm convinced that in the near future any cryptocurrency won't manage to catch up Bitcoin with value.

I would be surprised if at least one of the competition don't overtake Bitcoin; however, whichever manages to make payment by cryptocurrency "invisible" to novices (operating behind the scenes) will really make out well.

Actually its not that btc can not be compared with other alt coins, its just that btc leads the way and has gained more prominence than them all. However, with the years rolling in, many of these coins will check the hegemony of btc.

Bitcoin: Technically, it's recommended to read "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System." Capital is relatively early and relatively massive.
altcoin: Bitcoin is generally a system of this bit, but also draws on the source of bitcoin. But can do a large cottage currency, the technical level generally have innovation.

For now, bitcoin is by far the most popular decentralized virtual asset, but no one can guarantee it forever. There are already some alternative assets inspired by Bitcoin. However, a more reasonable assumption is that new assets need major improvements before they can replace bitcoin in the established market. Of course, these are still unpredictable. Without changing the basic composition of the agreement, Bitcoin may also adopt some measures to improve competition assets. Private feel cottage coins can only occupy some bitcoin market, but it can not replace bitcoin.

Altcoin is based on consensus algorithms rather than mining, meaning transactions can be confirmed in seconds; the supply of copycat money is fixed at 1% a year; the copycat currency is designed to allow you to trade selected digital currencies. We hope that the cottage money itself, mainly as a behind-the-scenes currency, hoping that the cottage money network can help provide more liquidity among currencies.

In my opinion, bitcoin is different from the other altcoins because it is the first and original crypto currency ever to be the most successful where its price market value had surge to that level. Many people believed and trusted bitcoin than the new alt coins because of what it had accomplished. Many people are quite skeptic for these new crypto currencies whether they will invest or not since these altcoins are just beginning to build up its reputation.

I agree, that bitcoin is different from the other altcoins since it had already prove to the people that it had achieved the highest currency rate ever in the history of cryptocurrency market. Many bitcoin users believed that this may still dominate from the rest apparently because new altcoins are just begining to start building up its name where they need to be recognize within the other competing crypto currencies.

Bitcoin is well-known cryptocurrency as we all know that ..and many people most used bitcoin ..we can buy something from it..we can exchange money from it we can trade through it we can invest through bitcoin. While Altcoin or Alternative currency is created to compete for bitcoin and to solve a once problem of bitcoin which is rapidly decreasing ..they come up to create alternative coins to solve this problem and they think that maybe altcoin can overrule bitcoin in the near of future..but still bitcoin is more powerful than altcoin why? Because you can not buy altcoin without bitcoin..you still need to buy bitcoin first before you get altcoin.

i doubt it, because of so many popping new crypto nowadays, i dont think not single one altcoin can reach what bitcoin has gone before. because of the market share of these competing cryptocurrencies, that is what special about bitcoin, so many altcoin have popped up but still bitcoin is on top. nobody beats the original as what they say. some cyptocurrency are not yet stable as bitcoin in terms of market share. bitcoin is the pioneer among other crypto.

I think we are at that point where we should stop calling it altcoins because most of them are getting momentum and we should understand that they have their own philosophy of executing a decentralized payment system. When it comes to the Bitcoin, I think a strong user base, first mover advantage, and strong price on the market makes it different from the altcoins. However, we have to work on the issues like high confirmation time and high transaction fees.

It is not only by the current price of Bitcoin we should use to compare the success of Bitcoin over other altcoins. The sum total of market cap of all altcoins is more than Bitcoin. That is the level of success altcoins have amassed. Individually though Bitcoin is way ahead of others yet altcoins have stamped it's self in the cryptoecosystem.

Altcoins does look like it supports the success of bitcoin, but it certainly not because altcoins.. bitcoin reaches the highest or more desirable value of many people, it's because bitcoin is the first crypto coin that was created with the support of technology advances first. On its popularity as well as its expansion that extends to a various directions supported by many parties/many people, it certainly causes bitcoin remain the leader of all altcoins.
I think the one of the things that can makes bitcoin more success.. that's if the more countries are legalizing bitcoin as a legitimate currency, so of course it can makes the development of bitcoin become more popular and more desirable among many people.

actually the difference between bitcoin and altcoin is not much different. only, bitcoin is the first crypto with agoritma technology. and the most important factor, bitcoin no one can control it. this is why bitcoin values are very volatile. for altcoin, certainly not easy. even difficult to compete with bitcoin. but if you can find a gap to get every profit, it can make you rich.

There is always a possibility that an altcoin would be able to reach what bitcoin has achieved. Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency that's why it is the most famous and it has the highest price. Most of the trades make bitcoin as base price as many platforms or merchants perhaps only accept bitcoin. There is no exact time frame as to when a certain coin would be able to surpass the market capitalization of bitcoin and in terms of price, it may take a long time. Let's admit there are better fee and technology that are already made compared to bitcoin but still bitcoin remains at the top because many people still believe in it.

I tend to agree. Right now, there are close to 1,500 circulating in the market and very few of them will survive in the long term. Anywhere from 90% to 99% of the altcoins will become worthless in the next one or two years. I don't know which ones will survive, but I have high hopes for coins such as Stellar Lumens, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Byteball, and Monero.

What distinguish bitcoin from others is just its popularity as it's the first cryptocurrency. Most of the people when know bitcoin at first and then know other coins. Bitcoin has a large lead as a store of value over every altcoin in having existed 8 years without failure. The security of Bitcoin has been proven far more than its much younger counterparts with usage by almost every metric exceeding that of altcoins.  8)
Further, Bitcoin is more accessible, with more exchanges, more merchants, more software and more hardware that support it. Bitcoin is far more liquid, with much larger volumes than every altcoin. Bitcoin has the largest developer ecosystem with more software and more implementations than any altcoin. Bitcoin has the most entrepreneurs creating companies around it with a lot of intellect, dedication and creativity going toward making it more useful.

IOTA is the first cryptocurrency not based on a blockchain.
Even if any new altcoin becomes more popular than Bitcoin, Bitcoin would remain famous as the first invented cryptocurrency in the world.

As long as bitcoin becomes the benchmark for determining the price and the movement of an altcoin there probably will not be any altcoin that can beat bitcoin success. But, to become the toughest competitor of bitcoin may be a very open opportunity because even in the competitive economy it is indispensable to make comparisons and get the shortcomings of each and be evaluated by developers to make the coin better.

You cannot expect altcoins in general to have the same success of bitcoin, only some altcoins are going to have anything similar, most other altcoins are not going to survive for long, besides the current success of bitcoin is still small compared to its potential, if bitcoin is adopted by a huge amount of people then we could say that almost no altcoin is ever going to reach that level of success.

2. and how long would it take?
3. what are success metrics?
4. What makes Bitcoin different from alt coins?

This is better than yours (the way you written the questions).

1. Unknown (maybe yes, maybe no) but I prefer altcoins will never reach or equal with bitcoin in term of; price and trust from people.
2. Unknown (we don't know what will happen in the future) if refers to my first point, it will take forever.
3. Adoption, acceptance, spread widely in worldwide (bitcoin and ethereum has these points)
4. The most significant thing is; bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency and altcoins just other copied, following bitcoin path.
There are a lot of altcoins which is better than bitcoin such as lower fees or faster confirmation time, etc. But, altcoins still can't reach bitcoin due to that (4th) reason.

Bitcoin has important implications for the development of cryptocurrency. That is a huge difference. it is a process. Altcoin inherits and improves the features of bitcoin to create services, quality and usability and bring it into practice. ETH, LTC are very good progress. It is impossible to know if the altcoin ratio can succeed in the future. We can accept and appreciate the positive on cryptocurrency.
