how can it happen with no mining/hashing power to make it happen?

as you said yourself, these are only rumors. or in other words some lies that people spread so that they can pump the altcoin in hopes that when they dump the bags the were holding they lose nothing or at least to minimize their losses.

it was always clear as day that the group spreading the "rumor" has invested a lot in S2X and were screwed the day the price fell hard because of that email in the mailing list.

Its probably better not to expect anymore for any segwit until the end of the year. All these speculations are causing some crazy price fluctuations both in btc and alts

Some small group of miners and traders who had already transferred their bitcoins to segwit2x futures decided to go with segwit activation, but it once again failed. It was due to lack of block greater than 1 MB to get activated and spit in to a new chain.Even if it would had been activated, there was no hash power to confirm the transactions. So,for now, there is no more segwit 2x activation.

The fork could have happened on block 494 784. This block, and even the next block were mined by Antpool (miner who didn't state he was supporting Segwit2x).
After this block being mined, no news were spread about implementing a fork.
Nevertheless, a few hours before block 494 784 being mined, some were expecting that the fork would happen and hoping that a new chain would come to life.

Look at this tweet:

Actually only 9% of miners were supporting Segwit2x.
So even though Segwit2x did not happen, some damage were done by a small group of people  :-\ Coinbase got fooled and temporarily stopped all BTC transactions.

Hence the general confusion... and this thread....  ;)
