Title: How do you fully secure your BTCs?
Post by: JB0011 on November 17, 2017, 08:35:20 PM
How do you make your Blockchain.info accounts fully secure if you want to do a long-term investment in BTC?

Possible risks I think that could happen:
1. Big hack and you lose your coins. E.g, Mt.gox a few years ago.
2. Government seizure and you lose your coins. E.g, BTC-e a few months ago.
3. Small hack and you lose your coins. E.g, someone somehow hacks your wallet.

There may be other risks too that I can't think of right now.

So, how do you guys make absolutely sure that your coins are 100% safe?
Would love to know the steps you take to guarantee your coins' safety - esp if you have Blockchain.info wallet.

Thanks!

If you think about long term investment (meaning that you only want to add some bitcoins to your wallet and don't want to cash out or use it) you can print a paper wallet and put it into some safe places (your house, bank safe, parent's house) in a closed envelope and you'll be fine for some time. If you want to use it, and you plan to invest higher amount (above 0,5 BTC or more) you will defenately need a hardware wallet, because the price of the hardware wallet and the security they provide is the best value for the money. But this hardware wallet is only needed if you really want to use all your BTCs, not just a little part of the investment. Also you should not have all your eggs in the same basket, so store a part of your investment in the Blockchain.info wallet but move some of your funds to elswhere also.
If you read thru the forum, you'll find really interesting ideas and solutions in connection with security.

If you're investing long term, don't keep your coins in a Blockchain.info account. They can be secured with a strong password and 2FA, but that's not good enough. You need encrypted backups of your private keys, and doing so with Blockchain.info is not intuitive or easy for users.

Also (and this doesn't apply to storing coins but rather to spending them): With Blockchain.info, you are not in control of the software that signs and broadcasts your transactions. That opens you up to new attack vectors like MITM attacks.

It's much better to set up a Core wallet (or at least Electrum), encrypted with a very strong password. That way, you will already have an encrypted wallet file with all your private keys.

The next step is considering cold storage. It's not advisable to keep many bitcoins on online machines, in case malicious wallet-stealing software and/or keyloggers find their way onto your hard drive. By installing a wallet and generating addresses on an offline machine, you can avoid such attacks.

Use blockchain if you have not a lot of bitcoins in it. So i agree on the most part of your comment. A offline wallet is better if you have way more bitcoins. You will regret that you have lost it when you didn't transfer them to a offline wallet.

I would split my bitcoins actually in two offline wallets just to be sure that something goes wrong you will still have the other half of your money.

If you want to fully secure your coins stop using online wallets. You can never be sure if someone else holds your key, it's that simple.
Of course you can use 2fa, a dedicated email that you aren't using for anything else, a dedicated device that you're keeping relatively clean, like a htpc that is being used only to access cryptocurrency wallets. This would make you more secure than 90% of online wallet users, but still not as secure as those who chose a hardware wallet among other things.

I think the chance of you being hacked is small. Keep your bitcoin in your wallet and do not let fear makes panic. Work and collect bitcoin, and if you are afraid of being scammed or hacked, sell the amount you collect every few weeks and sell it. That way will make you miss the chance of making profit when bitcoin it rises, but you will be safe from your fears.

I secure my BTC by means of changing the password of my wallet every month or when I think my wallet is at risk. You may also try to buy a hardware wallet and store it somewhere safe in your home, note: don't download anything suspicious to avoid a malware.

I Fully secure my BTC's by doing to keep personal and not letting anybody to get or to see my private keys/password/Json File so in that terms i can do relax and not worrying to much about securing my BTC's. And also im not just visiting any sites that bitcoins has related on it. until i verify that site is safe because its too dangerous to visit a website that you dont have much knowledge on it or you dont even know if that sites is trusted or untrusted. And im also putting a very very Strong password so it will be too hard for others to know sometimes even me i forgot it but thanks that i have other methods how can i remember those things.

I secure my BTC by using a hardware wallet to keep it and writing the seed words and keep in a safe place. My suggestion is not to keep your BTC in an online wallet or exchanges. Even if the companies are doing well now, doesn’t mean there won’t be problems in the future.

There is no possible way to secure them, people will always exploit its flaws in defense or security call it however you want, as security upgrades so does the "hackers".

It's not enough man, i think you should shut down the internet connection to your computer is the best way to avoiding thiefs or malware.

I use 2 factor authorization, never keep all your bitcoin in one wallet and use it to log into my online wallet private laptop. I have old and not worth anything, but with the duties he copes without problems. After each of my purses I format the drive and 5 minutes install new Windows from the image. No more action I'm on this laptop do not and Internet do not go.

Using a complicate password and setting 2f are two basic steps to secure blockchain.info wallet. And have to be alert of phishing emails, never click on links in emails.

Don’t use public wifi and login to the wallet.

So if you have like more than 1 BTC, it is advised to purchase hardware wallet, right. Should it be Trezor or Ledger Nano S?

Sometimes its the users mistake for holding a bitcoin wallet. Putting your bitcoin wallet is not easy to be hack by others if you always make sure that you activate 2fa authenticator and keeping your private key somewhere safe that you only have access. Put some defenders, anti virus and anti malware in your pc

Don't store your bitcoins to web wallet, your a newbie but that's should be the first thing you should know. Store your bitcoins at a hardware or paper wallet. Not your private keys not your bitcoins.

The top 3 most secured wallets which are recommended to hold large amount of Bitcoins are
  • Hardware wallet
  • Paper wallet
  • Private wallet(wallets whose private key you own)
These wallets are most secure and are considered to be safer than others.

Myself I bought a separate laptop (aside from my PC), where I only visit the websites I trust 100%. I opened it when I created the wallets, and that's it. I will open it again in 10-20 years when I will be a millionaire. Of course, passwords are everywhere

I really believe blockchain is not meant to store large amount of bitcoin or Ethereum, so if one is thinking of storing big amount of bitcoin then i will suggest he/she uses either paper wallet or hardware wallet. In this case his information is safe.

The best thing to avoid being hacked is try to have an account with 3,4security steps involved. like mobile number, pin, google authenticator. so that may help you and secure you much. Also dont post your address publically.

This is true of an exchange or broker account. But if you are just holding coins, you shouldn't be thinking of your wallet as an "account." An account is something you hold with a (trusted) third party.

As such, the best way to secure your coins is to use 1) a hardware wallet like TREZOR or Ledger, or 2) an air-gapped PC setup where your private keys are kept offline. You can secure a wallet like Electrum with 2FA, but IMO, keeping the wallet connected to the internet is more of a security threat to you than lack of 2FA.

Also dont post your address publically.

I think this is more of a privacy issue than anything else.

Blockchain.info wallet is not safe, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. If you can't afford buying a hardware wallet then I would recommend you to use a software wallet. Unlike the web wallet, software wallets such as Electrum or Bitcoin Core give you full control of your private keys and they don't send it anywhere else. You can even use them offline!

It seems that you answered your own question though so what is the point of a long term investment of your BTC with Blockchain.info if you can do it in a desktop wallet or hardware wallet that you have the own right to preserve your private keys to avoid the possible risks that you think may happen.

It is much better to have your own wallet that have your own private keys because it is a must and so easy to make, you can say that your wallet is 100% safe if you know to yourself that follow the guidelines in securing like never store the important seeds and private keys online or in your desktop, Bitcoin was never been hack though it is just only the exchanges of Bitcoin that is centralize by people who made it.

I much prefer giving priority in what type of wallet we choose to store our bitcoin, if you are choosing any online wallet i would suggest you to go with two time or three time authentication for logging in your account like Gmail-authentication, Mobile-authentication, etc.
You can find these authentication options at settings in  your wallet. When ever you wish to log-in to your wallet you get a secret code to your mobile and gmail accounts
to verify yourself, once the details matched then you will be authenticated and you can login to your bitcoin wallet successfully.
Ensure when you are typing your wallet URL you find https with a green color and hold the safety.
I would strongly recommend to make analysis about cold storage, paper wallet, nano ledger s etc. these helps better to store your bitcoin safely and these are fully secured.
Online wallets even does are like manipulated but not the cold storage wallets.

In my opinion bitcoin wallets even if it is online, are safe because bitcoin uses Cryptography and several complicated algorithms that can only be decoded by a certain key or password, mostly tge reason why some accounts are hacked is because of the user itselt, they unintentionally share there private keys or password to others. But if you want to invest for a ling tine in bitcoin. I suggest you but it on a hardware wallet! I think it has the highest securith among the wallets available

I doubt anyone will fully tell you their number one secret. Some of the replies you got here are maybe just a pinch of what they are actually doing. If they tell you the whole of it, then their 100% secured Bitcoin will never be 100% again. People who owns a large number of Bitcoin never tell anyone about their wallet or Bitcoin for security.

Thee best place to sote your bitcoin with full security is make a vanity gen address and store the private key to a paper wallet and some funds to your vanity gen address. But, Blockchain.info i would call it secured from hacks and you do hold your own wallet no one can touch that exept if you share your private key to someone. Put a 2 factor autenticator to make it more secured.

Using online wallets is a big risky task for everyone who is going to use bitcoin as long term. So maybe offline wallet or hardware wallet would better for long term investors.  Just 100$ can made your wallet more secure to being hacked. You'll surely feel so regret after hacked and thought why earth on you not transfer your all bitcoin on your offline wallets.

That's the best way to secure the Bitcoin we have. The features of private keys are very important because then we can get a strong security over the Bitcoin we have. So make sure we save Bitcoin in the wallet that has the feature, I'm sure the private key security will make everyone become much more secure. I will feel much better when I can get satisfactory results and maintain security is an important part in maintaining my future.
