Title: Active avalon cooling - anyone got a cooler avalon than mine?
Post by: MagicMike523 on June 24, 2013, 04:07:07 PM
I've managed to drop the temps of my avalon unit drastically by setting up a "portable" AC unit blowing directly into the intake.

The AC unit roughly doubles power consumption.  Before I set it up my unit was running at 47-49* at just 70ghash.  Now I'm getting a max of 35* at 85Ghash+.  Anyone out there managed to cool an avalon below 35* full load?

you spend 600 watt just to cool it down? thats stupid.

buy some server fans and run them at 5600 RPM and you will get the same temperatures with just 30 watt extra.

You're saying 35* at full load overclocked is possible with a fan upgrade? In a warm summer environment? That would be amazing.

Do you have a screenshot showing your temps?

I think you should try to push 90Ghash/sec.

then the portable AC definitely would be worth it.

Won't this create a lot of moisture within the unit itself??

As long as he has a decent A/C it should be fine.  They should have a bucket or exhaust for the moisture.   Server rooms/ data-centers use  Portable and Windows A/C to cool systems down.
So I doubt it will affect it.

Please let us know if you can hit 88-90+ GH/s :)

Nah you want some 7160RPM 38mm's like these (http://www.frozencpu.com/products/8147/fan-500/Delta_Mega_Fast_120mm_x_38mm_Fan_-_252_CFM_-_Bare_Lead_PFB1212UHE-F00.html?tl=g36c15s562&id=URIkprwQ) :P

Anything "Delta" will be FAST rpms, HIGH cfm, extremely LOUD, and use a LOT of power. Yes, caps are warranted on all of these points.

7160 RPM, 252 CFM, 66.5 dBa, and 4.8A @ 12V = 58 Watts. That's just crazy.

Cool system,

Maybe you should DIRECT the exhaust hot air from the unit to outside, this way, you keep the heat out.

Just the opposite, the AC unit pulls a ton of moisture out of the air. About a gallon every 6 hours.  So not only is the intake cool air, it is dry too.

I've been thinking about this. It makes sense. Although with the setup I've got in place now the exhaust is actually cool air.

If I get some more units I think I'll rig up a duct system to direct cold air into the intakes and concentrate all the exhaust for dumping outside.

I have a portable A/C just to cool 2 gpu rigs. It's more like 1200 watts, and a extra 25-30 dollars a month is nothing if can earn extra and increase the life of your equipment. If you live somewhere with jacked up power costs you may be better off just fans. There not nearly as effective though.

why do people go with portable ac units when you can build your own liquid cooling systems for around half the price.... or dont you do that stuff in the US

Liquid cooling will still produce the same amount of heat in the room, and it's not cheaper either. Personally I don't like my house at 80F.

Half the price of what?  An AC unit I already have? Don't think so.

my 10,000 BTU 64F Portable exhaust, no bucket A/C cost me $150 on craigslist :)

Congrats man for thinking outside the box.
