Title: How to get private key and seed out of my Bitcoin Core Wallet?
Post by: nicholasds on November 19, 2017, 01:22:10 PM
I've installed Bitcoin Core wallet on my Windows 10 PC. However it's very much different from Electrum which can see my SEED and Private Key easily. How can I backup and secure my wallet by backing up my SEED and Private key of my Bitcoin Core? Creating command like dumpwallet and privkey is confusing. Please help?

I wouldn't recommend anyone backing up their private key in a HD wallet, it would just be plain confusing to back up the seed especially when the change is sent to another address.

Bitcoin Core doesn't use a mnemoric seed system and all you get is a long string of characters which you can't memorise. Just back up the wallet.dat and you will be fine. Go to %appdata%/Bitcoin and you should be able to see your wallet.dat.

After I send BTC from exchange to my Core wallet, I back up the .dat file in a thumb drive or external hard drive right ?

then if anything happen to my pc or wallet, i can still restore it using the .dat file ?

Before will do and yes.

Assuming that your Bitcoin Core is determistic, ie. HD symbol in the lower right of the client, the wallet.dat will suffice. It contains the master private key which can generate all the addresses that Bitcoin Core will ever generate.

Reaffirming...

I swap various wallet.dat files around almost daily. This is obviously better than maintaining several 130gb blockchain files!
