Title: How was name coin created?
Post by: Bungeebones on June 25, 2013, 02:22:42 PM
I've just installed namecoin and it is basically the same thing as bitcoin, just with a different name. How did they do that? Do you just download the bitcoin software and rename it? Where could I get a copy of the software?

You must be joking, right? Bitcoin is open-source, anyone can modify the source code at will.

As reference, go to the Alternate Cryptocurrencies sub-forum https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=67.0.

There you will meet Worldcoin,Powercoin,Feathercoin,Hazardcoin,Sexcoin and about 40+ more coins.

Here is another list of different coins http://coinchoose.com/

P.S
If you think that programs are created by just renaming a file, you really have no business with this sort of occupation.

Namecoin is the only coin which is actually different than 99% of all the other coins  :D

I'd include Bitmessage in that group of blockchain-based protocols that accomplish something novel instead of just duplicating Bitcoin's functionality.

I wouldn't. Bitmessage in no way uses a blockchain.

I guess I misunderstand how it works at a plumbing level.

Except for the name, being a P2P system and using public key cryptography, I don't think Bitmessage is in fact in any way related or similar to Bitcoin.  (And those things are quite general properties.)  Nevertheless, I think it is a useful system - and it seems to be used almost exclusively by Bitcoin folks at the moment.

Don't worry about it.
Bitmessage uses something that could be very easily confusable with a blockchain. There is a public list of all of the messages in the past two days, which your client looks through.
It also implements proof of work as an antispam system, but no permanent blockchain-like storage is used.
