Title: Firm network + weekend mining software
Post by: darqnies on June 29, 2011, 01:30:42 PM
Hello, i am (head)programmer in a small firm in Poland. We have about 30 computers, used by other programmers. All of them are running all weekend.

I came up with an idea to run miners on them. Most of them have good graphic cards (radeons 9550+). I ran CPU miner without any problems, but with GPU i have to install SDK, drivers. And there's a problem, becouse it will take me all day (or even more) to install ATI drivers (200MB...) on each of them.

Is there any simple way to run GPU miner app without installing those drivers? Or is it possible to put all libraries into one .rar file and just extract and run the miner with them?

Greets, Leonard

No you need the drivers, just put them all on flash drives and then install them on each computer, will just take a few hours.

Yes, but is it possible to put - for example - all required *.dll into directory where the miner is and run it without installing drivers normally?

Btw. i have co-worker who will propably remove miners after weekend, so installing it every week, spending hours by installing drivers is not an option.

IF they are not being actively used during the weekend, there's always the option to make bootable USB keys (there's a few versions on the forums, look) and just run a miner off the USB key's booted OS (that already has drivers and network running.)  You MIGHT be able to find DVD images, but not certain.

Otherwise, yes, you are stuck with having to install video drivers, and probably the SDK.

Here's a link to that bootable OS ready to go for mining: http://forum.bitcoin.org/?topic=7374.0

Yup, bootable OS is probably the best idea here. But you should really check with the owner of the firm to ask him if it's allowed for you to do this.

Hello, i am (head)programmer in a small firm in Poland.

In a month: Hello, I am the just fired head programmer of a small firm in poland, and now they want my bitcoins, the money AND sue me for the security audit of their network. What can I do now?

This is theft. Your computers will use a LOT of power compared to normal "just doing nothing" and without permission this is going to kill your career. This is kill - I would never hjire someone abusing company resources for this. This is kill as in criminal charge.

If I were going to do this I would use something like puppy linux that would allow me to boot from a USB key and then remove the key.  I would also setup a cron job that would power down or reboot the computer Monday at 5am.  I have also heard of people PXE booting machines to do this kind of thing.  That would be ideal.  I would agree with others that you are stealing power from your employer if you don't have their permission.

Excuse me but 9550 was a good graphic card back in 2005... we are in 2011 now.

You need cards that support OpenCL, so card from the 4000 series or more recent...
