many explanations about this. for me both are almost the same. bitcoin is the first digital currency and altcoin is used as an alternative coin other than bitcoin as digital currency.

In summary, Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency which uses proof of work, meaning you need to use processor and energy in order to mine.

All other cryptocurrencies are called altcoins. Some of them are really similar to bitcoin; such as Litecoin -more coins, less price-, Bitcoin Cash. Some of them claims they are totally anonymous like Monero, and using different block size

Some of them are quite different technology, like Neo, Waves; proof of stake or smart contracts ,etc.  But all of them uses Blockchain technology.

You need to research yourself after this brief introduction.

Hello I'm newbie here.pls anyone can tell me what is the difference of bitcoin in altcoins.
If you say altcoins (alternative coins) you are referring to all cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin because it is the main cryptocurrency. There are now thousands of altcoin already existed and if we discuss here the difference of every single altcoins to Bitcoin it will take long before we finish discussing it here. Some altcoins are very similar to Bitcoin the only difference is they improve Bitcoin issues that are unresolved by core developers and create new coins, like forked coins. The other differences of some altcoins and Bitcoin are the specs it uses like algorithms (Ex. SHA256, Ethash, Equihash), block size, block interval, difficulty adjustment and total supply.

Bitcoin is Bitcoin  ;D. Altcoins are other coins except bitcoin. Example for altcoin is Ethereum. Every other coin except bitcoin is altcoin.

Bitcoin is a virtual currency that was created in 2009 by an unknown computer whizz or organisation using the alias Satoshi Nakamoto.
An altcoin is any digital cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin. The term is said to stand for “alternative to Bitcoin” and is used describe any cryptocurrency that is not a Bitcoin. ... Most popular altcoins use the same fundamental building blocks as Bitcoin.

Bitcoin was the first cryptocoin that was used in the market. It gave birth to alternative coins. Although the two are made for different purposes, both became useful and powerful on their own. There are a lot of altcoins however only a few remained popular and are being used.

Hello I'm newbie here.pls anyone can tell me what is the difference of bitcoin in altcoins.

Both of them are crypto currencies but bitcoin was launched first of all currency and it is known by world wide so the price of bitcoin is high when compared to the other cryptos.
Altcoin word refers to alternative to bitcoin,so we calling other cryptos as altcoin other than bitcoin.ETH is the best of altcoin and other altcoins are litecoin,BCH,BTG and XMR these are other best altcoins still there are hundreds of altcoin available but most of them will fade away with time passes.

the main difference is in usage.
bitcoin is a currency and can work and is working as a currency. currently a lot of people have adopted it as a currency in real world. from small shops selling small items in the real world or online, to big businesses and retail stores accepting bitcoin as payment.

the altcoins are also supposed to be currencies (alternative crypto"currency" is in their name anyways) but they are not acting as one to this date. they all are considered speculative assets. and their only usage is to be traded.

Bitcoin is mother of the crypto, and all of the cisculation value in the crypto depends on the bitcoin.
Altcoin has made to fix the scalability of the bitcoin itself with a lot of the improvements in the blockchain. when the transaction in bitfcoin is really slow and people are moving towards altcoin top get cheap fees for their transaction.

I don't think in the same way with you. If you mean ltc here as the blocks as bitcoin, it's wrong. Ltc was a bitcoin fork at old days, but it's now totally a different thing. We can create stable environment for altcoin without bitcoin.

Bitcoin is the main cryptocurrency and coins/tokens that launch after bitcoin is known as altcoin. Bitcoin as the main coin because those altcoins mostly used bitcoin as a benchmark of exchange rates against altcoin.

Bitcoin is the reference because it is the first coin. And the others coins are considered like some altcoin (alternative coin). Today, people consider bitcoin like a gold in the crypto currency world. Btc is the most reliable and the most stable (always in the crypto world) coin. But You must consider the big altcoin and the others.
I wait which coin will counterbalance a little the strength of bitcoin. It’s not good that the bitcoin are alone like that.
The market cap of btc = 118 Bln
and the second ethereum = only 30

you can think of Bitcoin as the first coin out there. It was basically the first coin that started using the blockchain, which is the technology that all coins on the crypto market are based on. Due to that, the fact that BTC has been the first, it has seen the biggest adoption from users and that's the reason why it has the highest dominance in the market. BTC is valued at about 120 billion at the moment and has about half the market share of all crypto's! That's quite something! Altcoins is anything else. Whenever you hear altcoin it's a coin that is not BTC essentially, since there can only be one Bitcoin and any other coin besides that is just an "alternative" or otherwise "Altcoin". Don't let that confuse you though, altcoins have just as much potential as BTC does and time will show that.

I think they are the same cryptocurrency but there are a lots of differences bitcoin is the main crypto that almost business online are accepting bitcoin as payment unlike altcoin that only few company are accepting it and mostly they are just use it for trading purposes..
Altcoin could also alternative since it has own value you can exchange it or use to buy something online depends if its accepted..
You can mine altcoin with computers CPU and GPU unlike bitcoin that you need to buy hardware like antminer s9 to mine bitcoin..

Well if you want to know the difference between bitcoin and the other alt coins, Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency which has gotten very successful with gaining alot of popularity and its price has kept on increasing(currently crossing 8k).After seeing bitcoin being such a huge success alot of different people started their own coins like bitcoins expecting its price to increase as bitcoin's did and to be successful. They usually differ by some features.

Bitcoin and altcoin both are cryptocurrency. But Bitcoin is a first invented cryptocurrency. Other cryptocurrency are altcoins. In digital market Bitcoin is high valuable currency. Because all the miners are access in Bitcoin. But altcoins are some of miners only accessing. So cost of variation is depending on competitors demand. Both are useful in current market. But profit is depends on coin value basis.

There are other 'pre-dated' cryptocurrency before bitcoin. But bitcoin literally took the world by storm and become the mother of all crypto's.

As far as altcoin (alternative coin) and anything not bitcoin is called altcoin. Altcoin exist because they either want to replace bitcoin (highly unlikely to happen) or improved one of bitcoin's design flaw (high transaction fee, slow confirmation time).

The entire world of cryptocurrency is divided into two classifications. On the one hand, there is Bitcoin and on the other hand there are alternate cryptocurrencies. The difference is simple and very elementary. Bitcoin is the only Bitcoin. The rest are alternate cryptocurrencies or altcoins. That includes Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, Ethereum, Waves, Lisk, Monero, and so many others. We are having more than a thousand altcoins already. Many of these are shitcoins.

Hi. Welcome to the crypto world. Firstly, bitcoin is the pioneer of cryptocurrency. Basically, without bitcoin, the other cryptos would've not exist. It is brainheaded by Mr. Satoshi therefore every bit of btc is called satoshi. For altcoins, they are the coins created after bitcoin. All other crypto currency that is not bitcoin is called altcoin.

Altcoin is an alternative coin that means the currency that differs from Bitcoin invented in 2009. Anyone can create a new crypto currency (alts), but here public recognition is needed. Bitcoin is a King of cryptomarket, but transactions with it are slower. However, this source will give you the best information:

There are lot of similarities and dissimilarities amongst them. First thing which is common in both of them is that both are crypto currencies.

Other than this, you can use either of them for having a very good amount of earnings. As far as dissimilarities are concerned, the basic difference in between both of them is that you use bitcoin for long term investment while altcoin is primarily used only for day trading and short term investment.

Bitcoin and altcoins are same, just Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency. Altcoins are alternatives of bitcoins, difference between them are just projects every coin has different projects.
Yes bitcoin is the pioneer of digital currency and altcoin is a form of alternative digital currency. Just as in the world that bitcoins like us dollars and altcoins are the yen. Bitcoin until now has always been a benchmark for all digital currencies in the world, but it could be someday there will be altcoin that can compete with bitcoin. It took a very long time, but if viewed at this time then bitcoincash and etherum can be a competitor who began to approach the popularity of bitcoin.

Bitcoins and Alternate coins are two different things but all of them are part of something we call cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency is becoming a thread right now and might be revolutionized in the future because it is such a great invention that might help us have electronic money to carry in the future instead of carrying cash. Bitcoins are very famous right now so they depend the price of other altcoins from it.

Truly it is, they are both digital currency but of different purposes. Bitcoin is widely known and used by the community since it was created first and the next coins created will considered as alternative coins in the absence of bitcoin in the market. Both of them are convertible to each each other, including into fiat money(USD). And when it comes into popularity, bitcoin will be on top among crypto currencies.

Wow. Your comment make sense.

Bitcoin has been designed as a P2P, meaning we don't need third party to transact with one another. Thus eliminating banks or any third party. This is the reason why many people find bitcoin as a good alternative. Also as P2P, it is being used for doing micro payments. However, with the high cost of transaction, I tend to inclined that this purpose no longer serves as today that's why mass adoption is very slow up to now.

As for altcoins, some of them is a fork of bitcoin, i.e. bitcoin cash although have some improvement, still lagging in the popularity of bitcoin. While other altcoins has smart contracts like ETH and faster confirmation time, it didn't enjoy the support because bitcoin remains popular as ever even it has problems like slow confirmation and high tx fees. Nothing beats the first.

Bitcoin is the first ever and leading cryptocurrency i n the world, it is the pioneer in the industry and the ine that set the standards while altcoin or alternative coin is simply the other coins that exist in the market aside from btc. Altcoin is another fo of cryptocurrency, most of the idea starts from btc and just differentiate it thru integrating and improving some btc. However those altcoin stays in the market alin just a short time. Most of it is called a  pump and dump coins, meaning it go high and suddenly fall down and gone. For me, btc is still the best and leading amongst any other crypto.

Yes, bitcoin is the mother of all crypto currency and it also first ever digital currency to be created. But all alternative coin creator/owner copy or edit the bitcoin protocol network to create their own coin.
Bitcoin is the strongest and originator of crypto currency this the reason why bitcoin stand out.
