Title: Bitcoin Wedding Registry. Any Ideas?
Post by: True___Blue on June 26, 2013, 02:19:24 PM
This upcoming fall I am going to marry the woman of my dreams. Right now we are putting together a wedding registry. I would love to use this as an opportunity to introduce the 150+ guests we are inviting to Bitcoin. I'm not sure how though. Right now we have a wedding website (generic and free) that has links to our registry. We are using an online registry that lets you add things from any store or site. Right now I'm thinking maybe connect them to bitmit or something similar. Or maybe a site where they can easily purchase BTC and send it to us? Any suggestions on and how to use BTC in the registry or at least expose some people to it are welcome.

Also my fiance is not the bitcoin believer that I am bitcoins. She thinks it is an interesting concept but is concerned about the lack of official regulation and the market volatility and ease of manipulation. When we discussed incorporating BTC into our registry she said "let me think about it." I welcome your feedback and suggestions as far as resources and info to make her aware of.

Thanks

She sounds as happy as my other half when I talk about Bitcoin!

As with everything marriage involves a lot of compromise. Often I find the decisions we've made together are better than the ones we make apart.

Any Ideas?

Yes. Don't devalue your wedding with stupid gimmicks.

Agreed.

Are you in the UK? Get a wedding list with John Lewis like every decent married couple who need tea cups and saucers and towels.

It is your choice, but isn't your wedding supposed to be about you and your spouse?

What happens to the traditional wedding vow of  ".... love and respect...." You'll sure will get your wedding off to an excellent start by trying to impose something on your future wife.

When a woman says "let me think about it", it is a polite way of saying "thanks, but no thanks". Take the hint, and move on.

Ok, it seems the consensus right now is for me to drop it. A suggestion that makes sense. Thanks for the feedback so far.

Are you sure about what you are going to do? She is already disagreeing on your idea even before you are married, maybe she's not the right person for you. Aka: find a bitcoiner woman!

agreed.

if the wedding guests dont already have bitcoin, and the end result is you having goods, then there is no purpose for giving the guests more of a headache trying to convince them to buy bitcoins purely to then spend on a product.

at the moment most people can still use fiat to buy goods cheaper direct. adding the purchase bitcoin fee's, the time to learn about wallets, the fee's of bitmit and the risks of bitmit (just like ebay risks) of non delivery by scamming sellers. it is not worth it..

maybe the only possible way to introduce them to bitcoins is to have the shopping wish list. or if they want to send you a cheque / money. you would like to receive funds in bitcoin..

going from fiat ->bitcoin -> goods is still not practical or economical just yet. and would make people decide bitcoins are not worth the hype.

wait until it is practical and economical before pushing user adoption. for now concentrate on merchant adoption

A simple suggestion is to just add something that says if someone wants to make a financial contribution to the honeymoon or the house, just say you'd love to receive bitcoin.

Then you get the word out, but no one has to do anything.

Or you could say in the registry description: "do us and yourself a favor and take a look at bitcoin." :-)

BTW, Just got married last month, and my now wife understands some about bitcoin, and is supportive.  I'm not sure what she would've said about the registry and bitcoin.

For a baby show, you could say "contrib to the baby's college education with bitcoin" ;D

BTC symbol on groom's cake wouldn't be so bad, but otherwise

Anything else goes into this territory, imo:

Congratulations on marrying the woman of your dreams. I doubt theres any wedding registrars that accept Bitcoin at the moment.

Why not ask if the wedding registry would accept Bitcoin? Its not to far flung to ask.

I know it's the opposite of what you want, but how about incorporating bitcoin into the wedding favors. I know match books are out of style but something similar with a paper wallet printed on it would be nice.

This is a nice idea.  Maybe give each guest a fraction of a BTC?  It will expose all of the guests to the Bitcoin world.   I am not sure how you could do it?  Perhaps have them email you after they open up their own wallet and you could deposit a small amount as a "thank you" for coming.  Who knows, a gift of .1 could be worth $1,000.  someday. :)  Of course, there will be guests who will not care or want any coin but it is a unique idea for sure.

If the price of BTC goes up, I think your fiance will suddenly become very interested. That is what happened to me anyways.  We bought in March and in April and I was blown away at how fast the price was going up.  Of course, it went down too.  But I think it lit a fire under me.  I researched it myself and realized that there was so much potential.  Granted, a risky investment, but with risk comes great rewards.  The early adopters are earning their fortunes by stomaching all these ups and downs for sure.

Blessings to you both on your new journey together!!!

I like this idea the most, you can generate paper wallets with custom backgrounds (i.e. nice engagement photo of you both), so it is both a souvenir from your wedding and an introduction to bitcoin. Then you need to include instructions on how to create a blockchain.info wallet and sweep the private key from the paper wallet.
