Title: How can I generate a new address?
Post by: TeePee on November 21, 2017, 02:44:25 PM
Hi,

There was a problem with a transaction which a processor said they could not send me. They said for security reasons I have to request it again with a new address.
But I do not see anywhere how I can change my receiving address.....can somebody tell me how I can change this in Electrum version 2.9.3 ?

Go to View -> View Addresses. You should see a Address tab show in your Electrum wallet. Go there to see every address that you own and just choose any of them.

You can also turn off the change address function if you need fewer addresses / ease of use..

I see it. But how do I choose any of them? I see the list, but there is no button to select them. I can get the cursus on them an click on them, but then still in the receiving tab the old address is listed. How can I select any of the addresses in the list? And is it safe to use any of them, even if they have been used before possibly in the past?

Just copy an address, and give it a label: "used for site X".
It's safe to reuse addresses, but not recommended for privacy.

So just to be sure: I can copy and paste any of the addresses in the list under the tab "used" ? And then if I give that address to the person sending me the coins, it will arrive with me?
So for this it does not have to appear first int he  "receive" tab? Because I just cannot find out how to drag an address from the list to the receive tab

Right click any address and select "Copy Address" or just select the one you want and press Ctrl + C.

Yes and Yes. You can use them as many times as you want.

So for this it does not have to appear first int he  "receive" tab? Because I just cannot find out how to drag an address from the list to the receive tab
It doesn't have to. The receive tab will only show you a new address after every transaction to help you not reuse your addresses. But all addresses can be reused as many times as you want and there is no problems on doing that. You can either use the address found in the "receive" tab or any other from the list whenever you want.

Thanks, excellent explanation!

The correct way to get new addresses is via the receive tab. Learn how to use it:

And learn why it's important not to reuse addresses:
