Title: Lets get Ron Paul to accept BTC
Post by: adpinbr on June 27, 2013, 03:40:05 PM
If you want to get BTC awarness into Ron Paul's mind and his followers pledge some BTC. If we get enough to convince him to accept our donation in BTC I will teach him about BTC and how to go about integrating it on his site. I am asking for pledges before I talk to him because I feel it would be much more convincing if I had some money behind me.

If you can get him to do it, perhaps Rand will too.  ;-)

Well, Ron Paul's not running for anything but maybe Campaign For Liberty would accept it.

When he was running he did not accept them for FEC reasons.

I used to work for Ron's campaign, and also know many of Rand's staffers personally.  I can most likely convince my friends at young americans for liberty to accept them, and possibly Campaign for liberty as well.  Ron has a little trouble wrapping his head around the concept of bitcoin, and he's been a gold guy since before most of us were born, but he was receptive to the concept and is all for competing alt currencies.  Rand is likely pro-bitcoin personally, but his political people are really cautious about anything that could be played against him when he runs for president.  They would be afraid of "rand paul accepts non-american currency commonly used for money laundering" or something to that effect.

I'm involved with a PAC that is supporting Rand, and we have accepted bitcoin donations that will go toward supporting Rand's presidential run.

I think this was an issue with regard to compliance with the FEC's reporting requirements.  FEC should be fine as long as donations are properly reported.  I know the FEC allows campaigns to accept non-USD donations as long as they are reported with an accurate USD value attached, however I'm not sure if this applies to something that could be classified as a commodity / "investment".  They need to show that the donor was an American citizen as well.

I believe New Hampshire State Representative Mike Warden was the first ever politician to accept Bitcoin donations. Reporting requirements was an issue that came up for that too:

How exactly are you going to "teach" ron paul how to accept Bitcoins. You think he would actually have interest in  Bitcoins and listen to you ???

Im a big supporter of Ron Paul and have made a 15$ donation on his website. I'd love to see him accept Bitcoins, but I dont see it happening.

He has moved on to other projects unconfined by his role in Congress.
