Title: "Official" Radeon 6950 Temperatures?
Post by: Meatball on June 29, 2011, 09:40:22 PM
Anyone able to point to any official link or document from ATI/AMD about the maximum temp a Radeon 6950 should run at?  I bought one from a guy on eBay and it's shooting up to near 100 as soon as I start mining with it even if I force the fan to 100%, so I shut it down.  I'm pretty sure that there's something off with the card because I have another one of the exact same card that runs at 60 degrees at 65% fan speed.

He told me that he was running it past 100 fine and I want to see if I can find something official on the temp ranges the card should be running in.

Thanks...

Did he take the fan and heat sink off of it?  Maybe the the thermal paste needs to be reapplied

Yeah, it's possible, and I'm going to talk to him and then possibly try reapplying it myself.

Sorry but I would NEVER buy a card that even reached 100 degrees. Definitely try re-seating the heatsink. Can't find anything official but everything I've turned up states that the card's max safe temp is 95.

Yeah, I didn't know he had pushed it that far until after I got it.  He says he'll take it back, so it's back to UPS today...

I have 2 6950s in crossfire.  The "top" card runs at 75C at ~100% load and ~100% fan speed.  They are in my gaming computer so they are in an Antec 1200 case and I've added extra fans to keep it cool.  I left everything at factory settings on the cards.

I have to say, the salvage value on ex-mining computer parts is virtually nothing and we're going to see tons of this stuff being sold over the next 2 years.  Include the fact that there are tons of people who have never heard of bitcoin and you'll have a good-sized market of unsuspecting buyers for the junk.

Have you tried mining in crossfire and with the cards individually?  Wondering what the mining penalty is for 2 cards in crossfire vs. by themselves.

80-90c is okay, but 50-79 is ideal.
