Even the question is ignorant. Presumably what was meant is: What is the capital of the United States?

America is simply the twin-continental land masses between the Atlantic and Pacific.

Generally speaking, capital is used to describe financial assets, while capitol is used to denote the seat of government.

Capital can also refer to an uppercase letter, so "A" would also be an acceptable answer.

Posting a non-sequitur is a capital idea.

Yeah but capital is the city itself.  The capitol is in the capital.
